IT Director Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a it director in Texas?
Most it directors in Texas reach the role by combining a bachelor's degree in information technology or computer science with progressive leadership experience, typically moving through roles such as systems administrator, IT manager, or infrastructure lead. Texas does not require a state-issued license for the position, but employers across Dallas, Houston, and Austin consistently favor candidates holding certifications like CISSP, ITIL, or PMP alongside a demonstrated record of managing enterprise-scale IT operations.
How much do IT directors make in Texas?
IT directors in Texas earn a median of about $171,530 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $106,390 for the lowest 10% to over $277,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire it directors in Texas?
Employers hiring it directors in Texas right now include Five9, 7-Eleven, and Alvarez & Marsal, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, large regional health systems, and major energy companies means demand for senior IT leadership is spread across multiple industries rather than tied to a single sector.
Which Texas cities have the most it director jobs?
Houston, Irving, and Dallas have the most it director openings in Texas right now. Dallas-Fort Worth drives the largest share through its dense cluster of corporate headquarters and financial services firms, Houston adds significant volume from energy companies and the Texas Medical Center, and Austin's growth in technology companies has made it an increasingly active market for senior IT leadership roles.
Are there remote it director jobs in Texas?
Yes, though they are less common than in purely analytical roles, since it directors often need to be present for infrastructure decisions, vendor meetings, and team oversight. About 21% of it director openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects the partly location-dependent nature of the work. Strategic and governance-focused it director roles at larger enterprises tend to offer the most flexibility.
How can I get hired as a it director in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is building toward the role through IT management positions first, such as IT supervisor, systems manager, or infrastructure team lead, which large Texas employers including health systems and financial institutions use as a pipeline for director-level hires. Pursuing certifications like ITIL or PMP while in a mid-level role strengthens candidacy considerably. Texas-based organizations including H-E-B, USAA, and major university systems regularly promote internally, making lateral moves within large IT departments an effective approach.
Where can I find and apply to it director jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to it director jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
