IT Security Specialist Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a it security specialist in Iowa?
Iowa does not require a state-issued license to work as an it security specialist, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most Iowa employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or information systems. Earning a vendor-neutral certification like CompTIA Security+ or a more advanced credential like CISSP or CISM significantly improves your candidacy. Hands-on lab experience, internships with Iowa-based employers, and a documented portfolio of security projects round out a competitive application.
How much do IT security specialists make in Iowa?
IT security specialists in Iowa earn a median of about $119,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $71,550 for the lowest 10% to over $169,620 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire it security specialists in Iowa?
Employers hiring it security specialists in Iowa right now include Bitco Insurance Companies, Casey's, and Collabera, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's concentration of financial institutions, regional healthcare systems, and state government agencies makes it a consistently active market for security talent.
Which Iowa cities have the most it security specialist jobs?
Des Moines, Davenport, and Cedar Rapids have the most it security specialist openings in Iowa. Des Moines dominates due to its density of insurance and financial services headquarters, while Cedar Rapids draws demand from manufacturing firms and regional technology companies, and Iowa City's openings are largely tied to the University of Iowa health system and its affiliated research operations.
Are there remote it security specialist jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and more than most fields, because a significant portion of security work, including threat monitoring, log analysis, and policy development, can be performed entirely off-site. About 29% of it security specialist openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of much of the role. Positions involving on-site infrastructure management or physical access control tend to require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a it security specialist in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from an adjacent IT role such as help desk technician, systems administrator, or network support analyst at an Iowa employer, then transitioning into a junior security analyst position. Large Iowa employers like Principal Financial Group and UnityPoint Health periodically post entry-level security analyst and IT risk associate roles that accept candidates with limited dedicated security experience. Earning CompTIA Security+ before applying signals baseline competency, and completing a capstone or home lab project to demonstrate practical skills gives candidates without a lengthy resume a concrete talking point.
Where can I find and apply to it security specialist jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to it security specialist jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, identify roles that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
