Document your hospitality credentials before applying
Gather transcripts, diplomas, and employment records that demonstrate formal training in hospitality, event management, or a related field. Designated sponsors require these to place you in the Trainee category and build your DS-2019 training plan.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1-compatible host employers
Use Migrate Mate to identify hotel groups, convention centers, and event management firms that have hosted J-1 Trainees before. Targeting hosts with prior J-1 experience shortens the placement timeline significantly.
Target convention properties affiliated with national hotel brands
Large hotel brands with dedicated convention services departments, including major conference resorts and convention center hotels, are more familiar with J-1 training plan requirements and more willing to sign the formal hosting agreements sponsors need.
Build a training plan that maps to banquet and event operations
Designated sponsors require a detailed Training Plan (DS-7002) outlining the skills you'll develop. Draft a phase-by-phase plan covering room block management, AV coordination, vendor negotiation, and catering logistics before your sponsor meeting.
Confirm the host employer's intent to sign DOL compliance documents
Before accepting a verbal offer, verify that the employer is willing to execute the formal hosting agreement and training plan your designated sponsor requires. Some properties delegate this to HR departments unfamiliar with J-1 obligations, causing delays.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement with your sponsor
Some Convention Services Manager trainees are subject to the two-year home residency requirement, depending on their country of nationality and funding source. Your designated sponsor reviews your situation and notes the requirement on your DS-2019 before issuance.

Find Convention Services Manager JobsConvention Services Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Convention Services Manager role?
Current hospitality students completing a practical component of their degree typically qualify under the Intern category. Early-career professionals who have graduated and have at least one year of relevant hospitality work experience qualify under the Trainee category. The Trainee category covers the skills most Convention Services Manager positions are designed to develop, including event coordination, banquet operations, and client services management.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for this type of role?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hotel or event venue where you work. Organizations such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT issue the DS-2019 form, administer the training plan, and monitor compliance throughout your program. The hotel or convention center is your host employer, which is a distinct role from the designated sponsor.
How can I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 Trainees in convention services?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Convention Services Manager roles at employers with J-1 hosting history. Filtering by role and employer type helps you identify hotel groups and convention facilities that already understand the DS-7002 training plan requirement, making the outreach conversation and offer stage much more direct.
What does the DS-7002 training plan need to include for this role?
The DS-7002 is a phase-by-phase document your designated sponsor co-signs with the host employer. For Convention Services Manager trainees, it should detail the specific competencies covered in each phase, such as pre-event planning, room block coordination, on-site execution, and post-event reconciliation. Vague plans are a common reason designated sponsors request revisions before issuing the DS-2019.
Can I work independently as a convention contractor on a J-1 Trainee visa?
No. The J-1 Trainee category requires a structured training relationship with a single authorized host employer. Freelance or independent contractor arrangements do not satisfy the program's requirements because the DS-7002 training plan and ongoing compliance oversight depend on a formal employer-trainee relationship that a sponsor can monitor.
