Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Facilities Manager
Document your facilities credentials before applying
Gather professional certifications like CFM, FMP, or BOMA credentials and translated transcripts before reaching out to host employers. Designated sponsors evaluate your qualifications against your proposed training plan, and gaps in documentation stall DS-2019 issuance.
Identify host employers with active training programs
Target large property management firms, universities, hospitals, and commercial real estate operators that already run structured facilities or operations internship programs. These organizations are familiar with hosting J-1 Trainees and are more likely to coordinate with a designated sponsor.
Search roles on Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned employers
Use Migrate Mate to filter Facilities Manager openings by employers who have hosted international professionals before. Narrowing your search this way saves time and puts you in front of host organizations already open to J-1 arrangements.
Match your J-1 category to your career stage
Apply under the Trainee category if you have fewer than five years of post-degree experience in facilities management. The Specialist category fits professionals with significant industry expertise in a niche area, such as building automation systems or sustainability compliance.
Build your training plan around verifiable skill gaps
Your DS-2019 training plan must show skills you can't acquire at home. Frame U.S.-specific systems exposure, such as OSHA compliance protocols, CMMS platforms, or LEED operational standards, as the core learning objectives your host employer will supervise.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule with your sponsor
Some Facilities Manager J-1 participants are subject to the two-year foreign residency requirement after program completion, particularly those funded by their home government. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting a host offer, since this affects future U.S. visa eligibility.

Find Facilities Manager JobsFacilities Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Facilities Manager?
Most Facilities Manager candidates qualify under the J-1 Trainee category if they have a relevant degree and fewer than five years of post-degree experience in facilities, operations, or property management. Professionals with deep expertise in a specialized area, such as critical systems engineering or sustainability management, may qualify under the Specialist category instead.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Facilities Manager role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not your employer. Your employer is the host site. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019, reviews and signs your training plan, and monitors your program compliance throughout the placement. You typically arrange this sponsor relationship separately from your job offer.
How do I find Facilities Manager employers open to J-1 arrangements?
Use Migrate Mate to search Facilities Manager openings and identify employers with a track record of hosting international professionals. Most J-1 host relationships form because the candidate brings the designated sponsor connection to the table, so targeting employers familiar with structured training programs significantly improves your chances of a successful placement.
Can a Facilities Manager J-1 participant work across multiple sites?
Your DS-2019 training plan designates a primary host employer and worksite. Working regularly at a secondary site not listed in your training plan can put you out of compliance. If your role involves multi-site responsibilities, your designated sponsor should document those sites in the plan from the start to avoid issues during program monitoring.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to Facilities Managers on J-1?
It depends on your funding source and home country agreements. If your J-1 program is funded by your home government, a government in another country, or falls under a skills list arrangement, you may be subject to the two-year foreign residency requirement. Your designated sponsor can review your DS-2019 to confirm whether the requirement applies before you finalize your training plan.
