Document your sales training objectives upfront
Your DS-2019 requires a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan. Map your field sales goals, such as territory management, B2B prospecting, and CRM workflows, to measurable learning outcomes before approaching any host employer or designated sponsor.
Distinguish Intern from Trainee category eligibility
If you're currently enrolled in a degree program or graduated within 12 months, the Intern category applies. If you have a degree plus at least one year of post-graduation professional experience, you qualify as a Trainee. Applying under the wrong category causes delays.
Target employers with structured field sales rotations
Host employers in distribution, wholesale, or B2B technology are more likely to support J-1 Trainee placements because their sales roles follow rotational or mentored structures that map cleanly onto the required training plan format.
Use Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned sales roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify Field Sales Representative positions at U.S. employers who have hosted international exchange visitors before. Filtering by exchange visitor experience saves time you'd otherwise spend vetting employers unfamiliar with the DS-2019 process.
Verify host employer commitment before sponsor submission
Your designated sponsor, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, cannot issue your DS-2019 until the host employer signs the training plan. Confirm written employer commitment early because sponsor review adds weeks to your timeline after that point.
Check the 2-year home residency requirement before accepting offers
Some J-1 Trainee participants from countries receiving U.S. government funding are subject to a two-year home country residency requirement after their program ends. USCIS and the State Department determine this based on your citizenship and funding source.

Find Field Sales Representative JobsField Sales Representative J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Field Sales Representative role?
Most Field Sales Representative positions fall under the J-1 Trainee category if you hold a degree and at least one year of professional sales or business experience. If you're currently studying or recently graduated without significant work experience, the Intern category applies instead. Both require a structured training plan tied to your sales development, not just day-to-day job performance.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for a field sales position?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employer. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, AIPT, or CIEE issue the DS-2019 form, review your training plan, and monitor compliance throughout your program. The company hiring you acts as the host employer. The employer must agree to the training structure, but it is the designated sponsor who bears legal responsibility for your exchange visitor status.
How long can I work as a J-1 Trainee in a field sales role?
The J-1 Trainee category allows a maximum program duration of 18 months. Field sales training programs structured around territory development, client acquisition cycles, or product specialization can reasonably justify that full duration. Extensions beyond 18 months are not available within the same host employer, so planning your milestones within that window is important from the start.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 exchange visitors in sales?
Search on Migrate Mate to identify Field Sales Representative openings at employers who are familiar with hosting international exchange visitors. Many sales-focused employers outside major markets are unaware of the J-1 host employer process, so targeting companies with prior experience significantly improves your chances of getting a signed training plan and a completed sponsor submission.
Can I negotiate commission-based compensation as a J-1 Trainee in field sales?
Your compensation structure must comply with your designated sponsor's program requirements and applicable labor standards. Commission-only arrangements can raise compliance issues because J-1 Trainees must receive bona fide compensation that reflects genuine training, not purely production-based pay. Most sponsors require a base wage component. Clarify the pay structure with both your host employer and your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
