Frame your training plan around sales competencies
Your DS-2019 training plan must document structured skill development, not just daily job duties. Map your Mid Market AE objectives to measurable competencies like pipeline management, CRM proficiency, and consultative selling techniques to satisfy sponsor review.
Verify your program category before applying
Current students or recent graduates typically qualify under the Intern category. Professionals with a degree plus at least one year of relevant experience apply under the Trainee category. Submitting under the wrong category triggers delays or outright sponsor rejection.
Target host employers with established J-1 hosting history
Search for Mid Market AE openings at companies that have previously hosted J-1 participants. Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by employers already familiar with J-1 host obligations, saving weeks of employer education during the offer stage.
Confirm the host employer accepts commission-based compensation
Many Mid Market AE roles include variable commission. Your designated sponsor must document your compensation structure on the DS-2019 training plan. Clarify with the employer upfront whether total target compensation or base salary will be reported to avoid sponsor compliance issues.
Check whether your country triggers the home residency requirement
Some J-1 participants must return home for two years before changing to certain other visa statuses. This affects career planning if you intend to pursue H-1B sponsorship after your program ends. Confirm your country's requirement with your designated sponsor before accepting an offer.
Gather proof of prior sales or business development experience
Sponsors assess whether your background justifies a Trainee placement in a quota-carrying AE role. Collect performance reviews, quota attainment records, or employer reference letters that document at least one year of professional sales or account management experience before submitting your application.

Find Mid Market Account Executive JobsMid Market Account Executive J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to Mid Market Account Executive roles?
Most Mid Market AE candidates qualify under the Trainee category, which requires a relevant degree plus at least one year of professional experience, or five years of work experience with no degree. Current students or recent graduates with less than one year of post-graduation experience may qualify under the Intern category instead. Your designated sponsor confirms the appropriate category based on your background.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa for an AE role, the employer or a sponsor organization?
The employer is your host, not your visa sponsor. Your J-1 sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or AIPT. That organization reviews your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your program compliance. The host employer signs the training plan and provides the placement but does not hold sponsorship authority under Department of State regulations.
Can a Mid Market AE role with a commission structure be approved under J-1?
Yes, but the compensation model must be clearly documented. Your designated sponsor will record your compensation arrangement on the DS-2019 training plan, and the host employer must confirm that your base pay or total compensation meets applicable wage standards. Variable commission components are permissible, but sponsors scrutinize arrangements where base pay alone appears inconsistent with the training purpose.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to host a J-1 exchange visitor in an AE role?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Mid Market Account Executive positions at companies already familiar with J-1 hosting requirements. Many employers have never hosted a J-1 participant and will need significant education about training plans and sponsor oversight, which adds friction and delays. Targeting employers with prior hosting experience shortens the offer-to-DS-2019 timeline considerably.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect Mid Market AEs on J-1?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies to some J-1 participants based on their home country and funding source. If it applies to you, you cannot directly change to H-1B, L-1, or permanent resident status without first returning home or obtaining a waiver. Confirm your specific situation with your designated sponsor before signing an offer letter, since it directly affects your long-term U.S. career plans.
