Document your sales leadership credentials precisely
J-1 Trainee and Specialist applications require proof that your background is substantive enough to justify the exchange. Compile performance records, revenue metrics, team size data, and any international market experience before approaching host employers.
Frame your role as a structured training program
Designated sponsors require a detailed Training Plan tied to your DS-2019. Work with your host employer to map National Sales Director responsibilities into measurable learning objectives, not just a job description, so CIEE or Cultural Vistas can approve it.
Target host employers with existing J-1 infrastructure
Multinationals and companies with international HR teams are more likely to have relationships with designated sponsor organizations already. Use Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers in sales-intensive industries that regularly host international exchange visitors.
Clarify the two-year home residency rule upfront
If your country of last residence appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, your J-1 may carry a two-year home residency requirement. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before signing any employment agreement, since it affects future H-1B eligibility.
Align your salary offer with DOL prevailing wage standards
Even though J-1 isn't employer-sponsored like H-1B, host employers must still compensate you at or above the wage for comparable roles. Run your specific title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to verify the offer before your Training Plan is submitted.
Negotiate sponsor organization selection with your host
Your host employer chooses which designated sponsor issues your DS-2019. IIE and Cultural Vistas both administer business and management exchange programs. Ask your host which sponsor they have an existing relationship with, since switching mid-process restarts the DS-2019 issuance timeline.

Find National Sales Director JobsNational Sales Director J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to National Sales Director roles?
Most National Sales Director exchange visitors enter under the Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you have a relevant degree plus at least one year of professional experience, or five years of industry experience without a degree. Specialist applies to recognized experts with substantially more experience in a specialized field. Your designated sponsor confirms which category fits your background before issuing the DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a National Sales Director position?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as CIEE, Cultural Vistas, or IIE, not the hiring company. The employer acts as the host organization and works with a designated sponsor to issue your DS-2019, develop the Training Plan, and maintain compliance. Conflating the host with the sponsor is one of the most common misunderstandings applicants carry into salary negotiations.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 National Sales Directors?
Use Migrate Mate to search for National Sales Director roles at U.S. employers that have demonstrated openness to international exchange visitors. Not every company has a relationship with a designated sponsor, so narrowing to employers familiar with J-1 program requirements saves significant time. Bringing a sponsor referral or an established contact at Cultural Vistas or IIE can accelerate a hesitant employer's decision.
Does the J-1 two-year home residency requirement affect National Sales Directors?
It depends on your country of last residence and whether your field appears on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, which includes many business and management specialties. If the requirement applies, you must return home for two years before changing to an H-1B or green card, unless you obtain a waiver through a No Objection Statement, an Interested Government Agency, or a hardship determination. Confirm this before accepting any offer.
Can a National Sales Director on J-1 status bring family members?
Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 may accompany you on J-2 dependent visas. J-2 holders are eligible to apply for work authorization from USCIS, which allows them to accept employment unrelated to your program. Their work authorization isn't automatic, though. They must file separately and receive approval before starting any job in the United States.
