What Product Management Is Like At Gusto
Our Product team is lean, which means you’ll have a high degree of impact and ownership. We believe in smaller, empowered teams that move quickly with less overhead. You’ll move fast by pairing sharp product judgment with fluency in AI tools — automating what slows teams down and amplifying what makes them creative and high-performing.
We’re boundaryless builders. Lines between roles are intentionally blurred, and our PMs do whatever it takes to deliver outcomes. You’ll prototype, automate, design, and ship — using AI as your co-builder to turn problems into durable solutions that deliver customer value with urgency and care.
We’re here to serve small and medium businesses. Gusto has a strong mission-driven culture, and we care deeply about lifting up these business owners — building technology for an AI-first world that gives them the superpowers to run and grow their businesses with confidence.
We’re comfortable with change. Our environment moves fast, and PMs here thrive in ambiguity — blending curiosity, experimentation, and AI-native craft to shape how products (and work itself) are built at Gusto.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager
Align your credentials with J-1 category requirements
The Trainee category requires a degree plus one year of experience, or five years of experience without a degree. Document your procurement and strategic sourcing history precisely, because the designated sponsor reviews this before issuing your DS-2019.
Identify host employers with active sourcing departments
Target manufacturers, retailers, and healthcare systems with centralized procurement teams. Search Migrate Mate to find U.S. employers actively seeking strategic sourcing professionals in roles that align with J-1 program categories.
Verify the 2-year home residency requirement early
Some Trainee and Specialist placements trigger a 2-year home country residency requirement under INA Section 212(e), especially if funded by your home government. Confirm your status before accepting an offer, since it affects future H-1B or green card timelines.
Build a training plan around measurable sourcing objectives
Your host employer and designated sponsor must file a structured Training Plan (DS-7002) outlining skills you will develop. Anchor each phase to concrete sourcing competencies like supplier negotiation, spend analysis, or contract lifecycle management, not generic management tasks.
Benchmark your offered compensation against DOL prevailing wage data
Your host employer must pay J-1 participants the prevailing wage for the role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level II or Level III wage for Strategic Sourcing Manager positions before you finalize your offer letter.
Confirm program duration limits before your start date
The Trainee category caps program length at 18 months. The Specialist category allows up to 12 months with one 12-month extension. Structure your training plan phases to fit within these limits so your sponsor can file correctly from day one.

Find Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager JobsSenior Strategic Sourcing Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager role?
Most Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager candidates qualify under the Trainee or Specialist category. Trainee applies if you have a relevant degree plus at least one year of professional sourcing experience, or five or more years of experience without a degree. Specialist applies to recognized experts in procurement or supply chain management. The hiring employer is your host organization, while a State Department-designated sponsor such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT issues your DS-2019 and oversees compliance.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hiring employer. The employer acts as your host. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, monitors your program, and ensures compliance with exchange visitor regulations. Organizations like Cultural Vistas, CIEE, and IIE serve this administrative role. Your host employer and the designated sponsor must coordinate before you can begin your program.
Does a Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager role trigger the 2-year home residency requirement?
It depends on your specific situation. The 2-year home country residency requirement under INA Section 212(e) applies if your exchange program was financed by your home government or the U.S. government, or if your home country has designated your skill set as in short supply. Strategic sourcing expertise is sometimes flagged in skills lists. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before accepting any offer, since this requirement affects future visa options including H-1B and immigrant visas.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting a J-1 strategic sourcing professional?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager roles at U.S. employers that align with J-1 exchange visitor programs. Many host organizations in manufacturing, retail, and healthcare actively seek experienced sourcing professionals for structured training programs but do not always advertise the J-1 pathway explicitly. Filtering by industry and role type helps you identify hosts where a Trainee or Specialist program is a realistic fit.
What goes into the DS-7002 Training Plan for a sourcing management role?
The DS-7002 must outline the specific skills you will develop during your program, the activities or projects that will build those skills, and the timeline for each phase. For a Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager, this typically includes phases covering supplier evaluation methods, contract negotiation frameworks, spend analytics tools, and cross-functional stakeholder management. Vague objectives like 'observe business operations' will not satisfy designated sponsor review. Each phase should tie directly to a measurable sourcing competency.
