Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Product Manager
Align your CV to specialty occupation standards
Technical Product Manager roles must demonstrate a direct link between your degree field and your proposed U.S. training. Document agile methodology experience, product lifecycle ownership, and cross-functional leadership in concrete, measurable terms before approaching any designated sponsor.
Identify host employers with active training programs
Search Migrate Mate to find U.S. companies that have hosted J-1 visa exchange visitors in technical roles. Employers already familiar with DS-2019 requirements and training plan documentation move through the placement process significantly faster than first-time hosts.
Confirm the correct J-1 category before applying
Current students or recent graduates entering a structured learning role typically qualify under the Intern category. Professionals with at least one year of post-degree experience in product management pursue the Trainee category, which carries a 12-month minimum and different program length limits.
Request the Training Plan before accepting any offer
The DS-7002 Training Plan is a legal document your designated sponsor must approve before issuing your DS-2019. Verify the plan specifies product discovery, roadmap planning, and stakeholder coordination activities. Vague or generic plans are a common reason sponsors delay or deny DS-2019 issuance.
Check your role's home residency requirement early
Some Technical Product Manager J-1 placements trigger the two-year home residency requirement if your home country government or your employer funds the exchange. Confirm your situation with your designated sponsor before resigning a current position or making relocation arrangements.
Verify your host employer's legal work authorization setup
Your host company must be registered with a designated sponsor organization and capable of providing on-site supervision. Confirm they have an existing sponsor relationship or the capacity to establish one. Hosts without prior J-1 experience often underestimate the lead time needed for program approval.
Technical Product Manager J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Technical Product Manager role?
The Trainee category applies to most Technical Product Manager placements. It requires at least one year of post-degree professional experience and a structured training plan tied to product management competencies. Current students or new graduates entering a supervised learning rotation may qualify under the Intern category instead, depending on the program design and designated sponsor requirements.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for a Technical Product Manager?
The J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as Cultural Vistas or AIPT, not your hiring company. That organization reviews and approves your training plan, issues the DS-2019 form, and monitors your exchange program. Your U.S. employer is the host, responsible for supervising your work but not for visa issuance.
How do I find U.S. employers open to hosting J-1 Technical Product Managers?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Technical Product Manager roles at companies that have experience hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Many technology and software firms are already registered with designated sponsors, which shortens the placement timeline considerably. Targeting employers with prior J-1 history is more effective than cold outreach to companies unfamiliar with the program.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to this role?
It depends on your funding source and your home country's government involvement. If your home country's government, an international organization, or a U.S. government agency funds your exchange, the two-year home residency requirement likely applies. Your designated sponsor can assess your specific situation before your DS-2019 is issued. A waiver is possible but requires a separate application process.
What does the DS-7002 Training Plan need to include for a product management role?
The DS-7002 must break your training into phases, each tied to specific product management skills such as requirements gathering, sprint planning, user research, or roadmap prioritization. Generic descriptions like 'working on product team' are insufficient. Your designated sponsor will reject or revise plans that lack measurable learning objectives, so work with your host employer to draft a detailed plan before submitting.
