Lead Software Engineer Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a lead software engineer in Hawaii?
Most lead software engineer roles in Hawaii require a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, followed by several years of progressively senior engineering work. Hawaii does not issue a state license for software engineers, so the path runs through demonstrated technical expertise and leadership experience rather than a state credential. Many candidates strengthen their profile with cloud or security certifications relevant to Hawaii's defense and government IT sector, which employs a large share of senior engineers in the state.
How much do lead software engineers make in Hawaii?
Lead software engineers in Hawaii earn a median of about $124,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,690 for the lowest 10% to over $238,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire lead software engineers in Hawaii?
Hawaii lead software engineer roles are posted by First Hawaiian Bank, Goldbelt, and Speechify and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's defense contracting presence, anchored on Oahu, means federal contractors consistently account for a large portion of lead-level openings alongside telecommunications and healthcare technology employers.
Which Hawaii cities have the most lead software engineer jobs?
Honolulu, Hawaii, and Hilo have the most lead software engineer openings in Hawaii. Honolulu dominates due to the concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and major corporate headquarters on Oahu, while Kapolei has grown as a secondary tech hub anchored by large government and infrastructure employers, and Maui openings are driven primarily by hospitality technology and state government projects.
Are there remote lead software engineer jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 23% of lead software engineer openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how naturally this work moves off-site. Roles in cloud architecture, platform engineering, and software development leadership are the most commonly offered remotely, while positions requiring access to classified systems or on-site lab infrastructure tend to stay in person.
How can I get hired as a lead software engineer in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate or mid-level software engineering role at a Hawaii-based defense contractor or state agency, then building toward a lead position over several years. Employers such as Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos run early-career programs on Oahu that accept candidates with strong fundamentals and relevant internship experience. Earning a cloud certification or obtaining eligibility for a federal security clearance gives candidates a concrete edge in Hawaii's government-heavy market, where cleared engineers at any level are consistently in demand.
Where can I find and apply to lead software engineer jobs in Hawaii?

Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and location preferences, and apply directly to each employer. No signup is required to see the listings.
