Security Software Engineer Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security software engineer in Hawaii?
There is no state-issued license specific to security software engineers in Hawaii. The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in computer science or cybersecurity, followed by industry certifications like CISSP, CompTIA Security+, or CEH. Because a large share of Hawaii openings are with federal contractors and the Department of Defense, obtaining a DoD security clearance early significantly strengthens a candidate's prospects in the local market.
How much do security software engineers make in Hawaii?
Security software engineers in Hawaii earn a median of about $124,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,690 for the lowest 10% to over $238,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security software engineers in Hawaii?
Companies currently hiring security software engineers in Hawaii include Booz Allen Hamilton, Bank of Hawaii, and Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Many of the most consistent openings come from defense contractors and federal agencies with a permanent presence across Oahu's military installations.
Which Hawaii cities have the most security software engineer jobs?
Honolulu, Ford Island, and Kauai account for the largest concentration of security software engineer openings in Hawaii. Honolulu drives the majority of postings due to its density of federal agencies, defense contractors, and financial institutions, while areas near Pearl Harbor and Kaneohe Bay generate steady demand tied directly to military and intelligence operations headquartered there.
Are there remote security software engineer jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, and more than most technical fields, since security software engineering is largely code- and systems-based work that can be performed remotely. About 0% of security software engineer openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, though roles requiring an active clearance or access to classified systems are more likely to mandate on-site presence. Cloud security, application security, and compliance-focused positions tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a security software engineer in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to junior security analyst or associate software engineer roles with federal contractors like Booz Allen Hamilton or Leidos, both of which recruit new graduates for Hawaii-based government programs. Pursuing a CompTIA Security+ certification before applying gives candidates a concrete credential that these employers recognize. Lateral moves from IT support, network administration, or systems administration roles within Hawaii's military-adjacent workforce are also a well-established route into security engineering.
