Security Software Engineer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security software engineer in Washington?
Washington does not require a state-issued license to work as a security software engineer, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or cybersecurity. From there, certifications like CISSP, CEH, or CompTIA Security+ strengthen a candidacy significantly. Washington's concentration of cloud and defense employers means hands-on cloud security or clearance-eligible experience accelerates hiring considerably.
How much do security software engineers make in Washington?
Security software engineers in Washington earn a median of about $166,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,810 for the lowest 10% to over $255,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security software engineers in Washington?
Employers hiring security software engineers in Washington right now include Amazon, Google, and Amazon Web Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Washington's dense concentration of cloud, aerospace, and defense organizations means security engineering roles appear across a wide range of employer sizes and sectors throughout the state.
Which Washington cities have the most security software engineer jobs?
Seattle, Bellevue, and Kirkland have the most security software engineer openings in Washington. Seattle and Bellevue drive the majority of listings through their headquarters-dense tech ecosystem anchored by companies like Amazon and Microsoft, while Redmond's concentration of enterprise software and defense contractors generates consistent demand outside the core Seattle metro.
Are there remote security software engineer jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most engineering fields, because security software engineering is primarily code-and-analysis work that translates well to distributed teams. About 42% of security software engineer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting broad industry acceptance of distributed security teams. Application security and cloud security roles are the sub-areas most frequently posted as fully remote.
How can I get hired as a security software engineer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a software engineering or IT role with a security component, then moving laterally once you have foundational credentials. Washington employers including Microsoft and Amazon run university recruit and early-career programs that accept new graduates into security-adjacent engineering tracks. Building a portfolio of capture-the-flag competitions, open-source security tooling contributions, or a CompTIA Security+ certification gives candidates without professional experience a concrete edge when applying to these programs.
Where can I find and apply to security software engineer jobs in Washington?
You can find and apply to security software engineer jobs in Washington on Migrate Mate, which lists current Washington openings across industries and experience levels. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly from the listing.
