Security Software Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security software engineer in New York?
Most security software engineers in New York enter the field with a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or cybersecurity, followed by a role in software development or IT security. New York has no state license specific to this role, but employers in the state's regulated financial sector strongly favor candidates who hold certifications such as CISSP or GIAC designations. Building a portfolio of secure code and contributing to open-source security tooling strengthens applications considerably.
How much do security software engineers make in New York?
Security software engineers in New York earn a median of about $166,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,430 for the lowest 10% to over $224,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security software engineers in New York?
Employers hiring security software engineers in New York right now include Amazon, Plaid, and Vercel, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's dense concentration of financial institutions, healthcare networks, and enterprise technology firms means openings appear continuously across both large organizations and specialized cybersecurity consultancies.
Which New York cities have the most security software engineer jobs?
New York and Berlin have the most security software engineer openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its concentration of global financial institutions, major tech offices, and healthcare systems that all maintain large internal security engineering teams, while openings in Albany and Buffalo tend to cluster around government agencies, state-chartered financial institutions, and regional healthcare employers.
Are there remote security software engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most engineering fields, because security software engineering is fundamentally code-based and collaborative through digital tools. Application security, security tooling development, and code review roles tend to be the most remote-compatible.
How can I get hired as a security software engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a junior software engineer or security analyst role at a New York financial institution or large technology employer, then moving laterally once you have demonstrated secure coding skills. JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup both run structured new-graduate technology programs in New York City that expose early-career candidates to security engineering rotations. Earning a GIAC entry-level certification and completing a capstone security project strengthens applications when professional experience is limited.
