AI Software Developer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai software developer in Washington?
There is no state-issued license required to work as an ai software developer in Washington. Most roles require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, and Washington employers strongly favor candidates with hands-on machine learning or AI project experience. Building a portfolio through open-source contributions, capstone projects, or internships with Washington-based tech firms accelerates hiring. Cloud certifications from Azure or AWS are widely recognized and add concrete credibility.
How much do AI software developers make in Washington?
AI software developers in Washington earn a median of about $166,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,810 for the lowest 10% to over $255,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai software developers in Washington?
Employers hiring ai software developers in Washington right now include Amazon, Google, and Amazon Web Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Washington's dense concentration of technology headquarters and defense contractors means AI development roles appear across both commercial product companies and large government-contracted engineering firms.
Which Washington cities have the most ai software developer jobs?
Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond have the most ai software developer openings in Washington. Seattle drives the highest volume as the headquarters city for major technology platforms and cloud services, while Bellevue and Redmond anchor a secondary corridor of enterprise software, gaming, and autonomous vehicle research that draws consistent hiring across seniority levels.
Are there remote ai software developer jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 82% of ai software developer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally the work translates to distributed teams. Model development, research, and LLM integration work are the sub-areas most likely to appear as fully remote, while roles requiring access to proprietary hardware or secure facilities tend to stay on-site.
How can I get hired as a ai software developer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a new-graduate software engineering role with an AI focus, then transitioning once you have production experience. Microsoft's Leap program and Amazon's university recruiting pipelines both bring in candidates without professional AI experience but with strong academic or project portfolios. Contributing to open-source ML projects, completing a machine learning specialization, and applying to ML engineer associate or data scientist roles at Washington-based mid-size software companies are the most direct lateral moves into the field.
