Security Engineer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security engineer in Washington?
Washington does not require a state-issued license to work as a security engineer, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most roles expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, cybersecurity, or information systems, combined with certifications such as CISSP, CompTIA Security+, or a cloud-provider security specialty. Washington employers, especially those in defense contracting, also value candidates who can obtain or already hold a federal security clearance.
How much do security engineers make in Washington?
Security engineers in Washington earn a median of about $128,940 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,210 for the lowest 10% to over $200,610 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security engineers in Washington?
Employers hiring security engineers in Washington right now include Amazon, Google, and Apple, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Washington's concentration of major cloud platforms, aerospace firms, and federal contractors means demand is broad, covering both commercial product security and government-focused compliance and cleared work.
Which Washington cities have the most security engineer jobs?
Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond have the most security engineer openings in Washington. Seattle and the Eastside cities of Bellevue and Redmond drive the largest share of volume through the headquarters and major campuses of Amazon, Microsoft, and their vendor ecosystems, while Tacoma and the greater Puget Sound area generate steady demand from defense contractors and federal agencies tied to nearby military installations.
Are there remote security engineer jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 53% of security engineer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and cloud-native nature of much of the work. Roles centered on cloud security architecture, application security review, and threat intelligence analysis are the most likely to offer full or partial remote arrangements, while positions requiring hands-on lab access or federal clearance tend to be on-site.
How can I get hired as a security engineer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate security analyst role, which Washington's large technology and defense employers use as a feeder into full security engineer positions. Amazon and Microsoft run structured university hire and rotational programs that accept candidates with strong academic backgrounds but limited professional experience. Lateral moves from IT support, systems administration, or network operations are common on-ramps, and holding CompTIA Security+ or a relevant cloud certification gives candidates a clear edge in competitive applicant pools.
Where can I find and apply to security engineer jobs in Washington?
You can find and apply to security engineer jobs in Washington on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and location preferences, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
