Licensed Mental Health Professional Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a licensed mental health professional in Hawaii?
You become a licensed mental health counselor in Hawaii by earning a master's degree in counseling or a related clinical field, completing the required supervised clinical hours under a qualified supervisor, and passing the National Counselor Examination or an equivalent exam approved by the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Professional and Vocational Licensing division, which oversees the mental health counselor license. Once all requirements are met, you submit your application through that board for review and approval.
Which companies hire licensed mental health professionals in Hawaii?
Companies currently hiring licensed mental health professionals in Hawaii include Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, Hilo Benioff Medical Center, and Service Corporation International, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and state-funded community mental health programs are consistently among the most active sources of full-time openings across the islands.
Which Hawaii cities have the most licensed mental health professional jobs?
The cities with the most licensed mental health professional openings in Hawaii are Hilo, Honolulu, and Kapaa. Honolulu anchors the market as the state's largest metro and the home of its major health systems and state agencies, while Hilo and Kailua-Kona reflect demand driven by community mental health centers and residential programs serving Hawaii Island's rural and underserved populations.
Are there remote licensed mental health professional jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, and more than many clinical fields, because licensed mental health counselors can deliver therapy and case management entirely through telehealth. About 0% of licensed mental health professional openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly telehealth has been adopted across the islands. Outpatient therapy, crisis counseling, and care coordination roles are the positions most commonly offered in a remote or hybrid format.
How can I get hired as a licensed mental health professional in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to apply for associate or trainee clinician roles at Hawaii's federally qualified health centers, such as Waimanalo Health Center or Kokua Kalihi Valley, and at State of Hawaii Department of Health community mental health centers, which routinely hire post-graduate candidates still accumulating supervised hours toward licensure. Lateral moves from case manager, peer specialist, or behavioral health technician positions at these same organizations frequently lead to counselor roles. Holding a provisional license from the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs and completing any supervised-hours agreement before applying gives candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to licensed mental health professional jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to licensed mental health professional jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current Hawaii openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location across the islands, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
