Mental Health Professional Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health professional in Hawaii?
Becoming a licensed mental health counselor in Hawaii requires a master's degree in counseling or a closely related field, followed by supervised post-degree clinical hours and passing the National Counselor Examination. Licensure is issued by the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Professional and Vocational Licensing division. Social workers pursue licensure through the same division under separate LCSW requirements, while psychologists must meet doctoral-level standards and pass additional board examinations.
Which companies hire mental health professionals in Hawaii?
Employers hiring mental health professionals in Hawaii right now include Hilo Benioff Medical Center, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, and Service Corporation International, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers serving Native Hawaiian populations, and integrated hospital systems account for a large share of consistent openings across the islands.
Which Hawaii cities have the most mental health professional jobs?
Hilo, Honolulu, and Waimea lead Hawaii for mental health professional openings. Honolulu concentrates the majority of positions given its density of hospital systems, county behavioral health agencies, and private group practices, while Maui County and Hilo reflect growing demand driven by community health centers and school-based mental health expansion on the neighbor islands.
Are there remote mental health professional jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, and more than many clinical fields, because telehealth delivery has become a routine part of outpatient mental health practice in Hawaii. About 0% of mental health professional openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the state's geographic spread across islands where telehealth reduces travel barriers. Intake coordinators, care managers, and outpatient therapists holding a Hawaii license are the roles most commonly offered in remote or hybrid formats.
How can I get hired as a mental health professional in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a behavioral health technician, case manager aide, or crisis line counselor role while completing your supervised clinical hours toward licensure. Hawaii Pacific Health and community mental health centers affiliated with the Hawaii Department of Health run associate-level programs and internship placements that regularly convert to full employment. A completed master's degree with a Hawaii provisional license or registered intern status gives candidates a clear edge when applying to these roles.
Where can I find and apply to mental health professional jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to mental health professional jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current Hawaii openings updated regularly. Search for roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred island or format, then apply directly to the ones that fit your background.
