Mental Health Professional Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health professional in New York?
Licensure through the New York State Education Department is the standard path for most clinical mental health roles in New York. Depending on the specialty, candidates pursue credentials such as the Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), each requiring a master's degree and supervised clinical hours. Applicants sit for a national licensing exam and register through the Office of the Professions before practicing independently.
Which companies hire mental health professionals in New York?
Employers hiring mental health professionals in New York right now include YAI - Seeing Beyond Disability, Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, and Association to Benefit Children, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems, community mental health centers, and school-based health programs are consistently among the most active sources of full-time openings.
Which New York cities have the most mental health professional jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Queens have the most mental health professional openings in New York. New York City drives the majority of listings due to the concentration of major hospital systems, community health organizations, and public agencies, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through regional medical centers, state government behavioral health programs, and university-affiliated clinics.
Are there remote mental health professional jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many clinical fields, because telehealth has become a standard care delivery model for therapy and counseling. About 0% of mental health professional openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting continued adoption of virtual behavioral health services. Roles in individual outpatient therapy and psychiatric evaluation are the most likely to offer fully remote arrangements, while crisis services and inpatient work remain on-site.
How can I get hired as a mental health professional in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an unlicensed or limited-permit position while accumulating the supervised hours required for full licensure in New York. NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, and large community health networks regularly hire master's-level graduates as mental health counselor trainees or case managers who work under supervision toward their LMHC or LCSW. Adjacent roles such as care coordinator, crisis counselor assistant, or psychiatric rehabilitation worker are common lateral entry points, and completing a New York-based field placement or internship with a recognized clinic strengthens any application considerably.
