Psychiatric Nurse Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a psychiatric nurse in New York?
To become a psychiatric nurse in New York, you must first earn a nursing degree and pass the NCLEX-RN to obtain a Registered Nurse license through the New York State Education Department, which oversees all RN licensure in the state. Most psychiatric nursing roles at New York hospital systems and behavioral health centers require a BSN. Pursuing a specialty certification such as the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center strengthens your candidacy considerably in this market.
How much do psychiatric nurses make in New York?
Psychiatric nurses in New York earn a median of about $109,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,760 for the lowest 10% to over $157,090 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire psychiatric nurses in New York?
Employers hiring psychiatric nurses in New York right now include New York State Office of Mental Health, Essen Health Care, and NYU Langone Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and public hospital networks tend to post the most consistent volume, particularly for inpatient and crisis stabilization roles.
Which New York cities have the most psychiatric nurse jobs?
Bronx, New York, and Patchogue have the most psychiatric nurse openings in New York. New York City leads because of the sheer density of major academic medical centers, public health system facilities, and community behavioral health organizations, while Buffalo and Albany offer steady demand driven by regional hospital systems and state-operated psychiatric centers that are anchored to those metro areas.
Are there remote psychiatric nurse jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Psychiatric nursing is fundamentally a hands-on clinical role, so most positions require on-site presence. About 6% of psychiatric nurse openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those are concentrated almost entirely in telehealth triage, utilization review, and care management functions rather than direct inpatient or crisis care.
How can I get hired as a psychiatric nurse in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to nurse residency or new-graduate transition programs at large New York systems such as NYC Health + Hospitals or Northwell Health, which run structured behavioral health residencies designed for candidates without specialized psychiatric experience. Lateral moves from medical-surgical or emergency nursing roles are common and well-regarded. Completing a psychiatric clinical rotation, obtaining BLS certification, and sitting for the NCLEX promptly positions new graduates competitively for entry-level inpatient roles at New York State-operated psychiatric centers as well.
Where can I find and apply to psychiatric nurse jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to psychiatric nurse jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and preferred setting, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
