We are looking for a motivated individual to fill the position of Machine Learning Expert within our Subsurface Innovation Imaging Team based in Houston, TX .
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Develop ML and hybrid physics-ML methods for seismic imaging, inversion, and velocity model building — including ML-assisted RTM, LSRTM, and FWI.
Apply deep learning, generative models, neural operators, and physics-informed approaches to problems such as denoising, interpolation, image enhancement, model prediction, uncertainty estimation, and automated interpretation.
Build workflows that handle large multidimensional seismic datasets on GPU and cloud infrastructure.
Validate new methods against established physics-based approaches, and make an evidence-based case for where they add value and where they do not.
Move successful prototypes into production imaging workflows, with the documentation and reproducibility that requires.
Communicate results clearly to geophysicists, data scientists, and asset teams.
Qualifications:
M.S. or Ph.D. in Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
Minimum 5 years of hands-on (post academic) FWI experience: you have personally run full-waveform inversion on real seismic data. Familiarity with FWI from coursework or literature alone is not sufficient for this role.
Demonstrated experience applying machine learning to geophysical or other physics-based scientific problems.
Working knowledge of seismic imaging and the numerical methods behind it: wave propagation, inverse problems, and optimization.
Proficiency in Python and hands-on experience with PyTorch, including training, validation, and performance evaluation.
Experience working with large scientific datasets and computational workflows.
Sound scientific judgment: the ability to design a fair comparison, recognize a result that is too good to be true, and communicate uncertainty honestly.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience with neural operators, implicit neural representations, generative models, or physics-informed neural networks applied to wave-equation problems.
Experience combining wave physics with ML, including differentiable modeling and inversion.
Uncertainty quantification, surrogate modeling, or ML-assisted optimization for expensive geophysical workflows.
GPU, HPC, or distributed computing experience; AWS in particular.
Experience with offshore or Gulf of America seismic data.
Effective use of AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate development and debugging of scientific workflows.
A record of research prototypes that reached production use.

Machine Learning Intern Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a machine learning intern job in Houston?
Target Houston's strongest hiring sectors: energy technology, health systems, and aerospace and defense contractors. Roles concentrate in the Energy Corridor, Texas Medical Center, and Greenway Plaza. Candidates who stand out locally show hands-on Python or PyTorch project work, familiarity with large dataset pipelines, and any coursework or research tied to predictive modeling or computer vision. Networking through Rice University or University of Houston engineering programs also opens doors with local employers.
Which companies hire machine learning interns in Houston?
Employers hiring machine learning interns in Houston right now include Mariana Minerals, ENGIE, and Vitol, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's hiring mix skews toward energy majors and their tech subsidiaries, large health systems, and defense contractors with local engineering offices.
Are there remote machine learning intern jobs in Houston?
Yes, though it depends on the role. Machine learning intern work that is primarily analytical and code-based tends to be remote-friendly, while positions involving proprietary hardware, lab environments, or energy infrastructure tools are typically on-site. About 81% of machine learning intern openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with remote arrangements most common at software and data platform companies rather than energy or medical device employers.
How can I get a machine learning intern job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is through university research labs or internship pipelines at Rice University and the University of Houston, both of which have direct relationships with local energy and health tech employers. Entry-level roles like data annotation specialist or junior data analyst at Houston-area startups and mid-size energy software firms regularly serve as stepping stones. A portfolio of personal projects demonstrating model training and data wrangling gives candidates a concrete edge over applicants with only coursework.
Which industries hire the most machine learning interns in Houston?
The sectors hiring the most machine learning interns in Houston are Investment & Asset Management and Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's dominance in energy, its world-class medical complex, and a growing aerospace presence explain why those sectors consistently generate the highest intern demand locally.
