Maintenance Electrician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a maintenance electrician in New York?
The standard path in New York is completing a state-approved apprenticeship, typically through the New York State Department of Labor's apprenticeship program or a union-affiliated program like IBEW, followed by applying for a New York State Electrician certificate of qualification or a master or journeyman electrician license issued by your local municipality. New York City requires its own separate licensing through the Department of Buildings. Most candidates also hold a high school diploma or GED and complete coursework in electrical theory.
How much do maintenance electricians make in New York?
Maintenance electricians in New York earn a median of about $78,750 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $45,740 for the lowest 10% to over $131,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire maintenance electricians in New York?
Employers hiring maintenance electricians in New York right now include International Paper, Saint-Gobain, and Amneal Pharmaceuticals, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of transit authorities, large commercial property managers, and manufacturing operations means openings come from a broad mix of public-sector and private employers across the state.
Which New York cities have the most maintenance electrician jobs?
New York, Syracuse, and Buffalo have the most maintenance electrician openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its scale of commercial buildings, transit infrastructure, and institutional campuses, while Buffalo's manufacturing base and Albany's government and healthcare facilities drive consistent demand in those markets.
Are there remote maintenance electrician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Maintenance electrician work is inherently hands-on and performed on-site, so most roles require physical presence. About 2% of maintenance electrician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve supervisory, estimating, or technical support functions rather than direct maintenance work.
How can I get hired as a maintenance electrician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a registered apprenticeship through IBEW Local 3 in New York City or one of the upstate IBEW locals, which accept candidates without prior electrical experience and pair paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction. Large institutional employers like the MTA and New York City Housing Authority also post helper and electrician's aide roles that do not require a license. Completing an electrical technology certificate at a SUNY community college strengthens any application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to maintenance electrician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to maintenance electrician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to those employers.
