Maintenance Electrician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a maintenance electrician in Texas?
Becoming a maintenance electrician in Texas starts with registering as an Electrical Apprentice through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, then completing a state-approved apprenticeship program and accumulating the required hours of supervised work experience. After meeting the experience requirement, you sit for the Journeyman Electrician exam administered by TDLR. Many Texas employers, particularly in petrochemical and manufacturing, treat the TDLR Journeyman license as a baseline hiring credential.
How much do maintenance electricians make in Texas?
Maintenance electricians in Texas earn a median of about $58,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,920 for the lowest 10% to over $80,300 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire maintenance electricians in Texas?
Employers hiring maintenance electricians in Texas right now include TIC - The Industrial Company, American Electric Power, and Cushman & Wakefield, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of petrochemical plants along the Gulf Coast, large distribution centers in the Metroplex, and major manufacturing campuses statewide means that well-established industrial employers account for a significant share of open positions.
Which Texas cities have the most maintenance electrician jobs?
Houston, Abilene, and San Antonio have the most maintenance electrician openings in Texas, reflecting the state's industrial geography. Houston leads because of its dense concentration of refineries, chemical plants, and energy-sector facilities along the Gulf Coast, while Dallas-Fort Worth's large logistics, manufacturing, and commercial real estate base sustains consistent demand, and San Antonio's growing advanced manufacturing and military installation presence rounds out the top tier.
Are there remote maintenance electrician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Maintenance electrician work is inherently hands-on and site-dependent, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 3% of maintenance electrician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve supervisory oversight, technical documentation review, or remote monitoring of building management systems rather than direct electrical work.
How can I get hired as a maintenance electrician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is registering as an Electrical Apprentice with TDLR and joining an apprenticeship program through a Texas-based union hall, community college, or large industrial employer. Companies with major Texas manufacturing footprints often run structured apprenticeship tracks for candidates with no prior electrical experience. Starting in a facilities maintenance technician or building engineer role at a hospital, school district, or commercial property management company is another concrete way in, and completing the TDLR apprenticeship registration gives even first-year candidates a verifiable credential that Texas employers recognize.
Where can I find and apply to maintenance electrician jobs in Texas?
