Managing Editor Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a managing editor in Massachusetts?
Most managing editors in Massachusetts enter the role after building several years of experience as staff writers, editors, or content strategists, typically holding a bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or communications. Massachusetts has no state-issued license or registration for this role. Employers in Boston and Cambridge often expect candidates to show a portfolio of edited work, experience directing contributors, and familiarity with the editorial standards common to their sector, whether academic publishing, digital media, or healthcare content.
Which companies hire managing editors in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring managing editors in Massachusetts right now include Merck, Elsevier, and RELX, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of universities, hospital systems, and legacy publishers means editorial roles open regularly across a range of institutional and commercial settings.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most managing editor jobs?
Boston, Medford, and Ipswich account for the largest share of managing editor openings in Massachusetts. Boston drives volume through its concentration of media companies, academic publishers, and healthcare organizations, while Cambridge adds editorial roles tied to university presses and life sciences communications, and Worcester contributes openings from regional media outlets and healthcare networks headquartered there.
Are there remote managing editor jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. Managing editor work is fundamentally desk-based and document-driven, making it well suited to remote arrangements. About 67% of managing editor openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly Massachusetts employers have embraced flexible editorial workflows. Fully remote roles tend to concentrate in digital media and content marketing, while academic and institutional publishers more often require hybrid schedules.
How can I get hired as a managing editor in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate editor or editorial assistant role, then building toward a managing editor title by taking on scheduling, contributor management, and quality-control responsibilities. Boston-area academic publishers like MIT Press and Beacon Press, as well as health system content teams at Mass General Brigham and Boston Children's Hospital, regularly bring in early-career editorial staff. A strong portfolio of edited samples, even from campus publications or freelance projects, combined with demonstrated organizational skills, gives candidates a clear edge over those relying on a degree alone.
