Tips for Your Maxillofacial Surgeon Job Search
Tailor your CV to surgical volume
Hiring committees in oral and maxillofacial surgery want to see case volume and procedure mix, not just titles. List your annual numbers for orthognathic cases, tumor resections, and trauma reconstructions separately so reviewers can assess your depth immediately.
Highlight dual-degree credentials upfront
Many programs and hospital systems actively prefer candidates who hold both an MD and a DDS or DMD. Put both degrees and your residency program in the header of your CV, not buried in a credentials section, to pass the first-screen quickly.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists maxillofacial surgeon openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings by hospital affiliation type
Academic medical centers, Level I trauma centers, and private group practices each have distinct expectations for call schedules, research output, and case mix. Filter your search by facility type before applying so your cover letter speaks directly to what that employer values.
Prepare for clinical scenario questions early
Interviewers frequently present complex trauma or pathology cases and ask you to walk through your surgical decision-making in real time. Practice articulating your approach to mandibular fracture repair, free flap reconstruction, and airway management before your first phone screen.
Negotiate call schedule before signing
Call burden varies enormously across practice settings and is rarely standardized in the initial offer letter. Ask directly about average overnight calls per month, weekend trauma coverage expectations, and how call is distributed among partners or attendings before you accept.
Maxillofacial Surgeon Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most maxillofacial surgeons?
The companies hiring the most maxillofacial surgeons right now include Geisinger, Geisinger Health Plan, and Novant Health, with the largest share of openings in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Hospital systems and academic medical centers tend to post the highest volume of full-time attending roles.
How many maxillofacial surgeon jobs are remote?
About 0% of maxillofacial surgeon openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of surgical practice. The sub-specialties most compatible with remote or hybrid arrangements are telemedicine consultations, pre-surgical treatment planning, and post-operative follow-up review, which some larger systems have begun separating into dedicated roles.
How do you become a maxillofacial surgeon?
You become a maxillofacial surgeon by completing dental school to earn a DDS or DMD, then entering an accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency that runs four to six years depending on whether you pursue a concurrent MD. After residency, you sit for board certification through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which requires passing written and oral examinations and documenting a qualifying surgical case log.
How do you get hired as a maxillofacial surgeon with limited attending experience?
Candidates coming directly out of residency should emphasize the breadth and volume of their case log rather than years of independent practice. Applying to academic medical centers or hospital systems with structured junior attending programs is practical because those employers expect to onboard new graduates. Fellowship training in a subspecialty like craniofacial surgery or head and neck oncology also strengthens competitiveness for academic and quaternary care positions.
What does the maxillofacial surgeon interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a phone or video screen with a department chief or recruiter, followed by an on-site visit that includes a tour of the operating suite, meetings with department leadership, and often a case presentation or clinical scenario discussion. Some academic programs require a research talk or grand rounds presentation. A credentialing review and reference checks from residency faculty or prior supervisors follow before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to maxillofacial surgeon jobs?
You can find and apply to maxillofacial surgeon jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the available roles, identify the ones that fit your specialty and practice setting preferences, and apply directly to each listing from the page.
