TITLE: Sr. 1 Mechanical Technician
POSITION OBJECTIVE: This person is heavily involved in the troubleshooting, repair and monitoring of equipment/process problems in manufacturing. This individual will work with the extrusion and press Operators to learn the process of operating an extrusion line. On a daily basis, must be able to effectively communicate (orally and written) with employees and other departmental personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Willing to adhere to all plant safety rules and promote an environment where safety is first.
- Proactive in addressing safety issues and concerns.
- 3-5 years’ experience in the troubleshooting and maintenance of industrial equipment and machinery.
- Experienced with interpreting electrical schematics and drawings efficiently.
- Capable of programming drives and understand PLC logic.
- Basic welding and machining skills.
- Intermediate knowledge of standard software (MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook).
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ensure consistent, dependable attendance and demonstrate a willingness to accommodate non-standard work hours as necessary.
- Capable of effectively managing job-related stress and fostering productive workplace interactions.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must observe all safety precautions and regulations at all times in all areas where duties are performed. Will be responsible for reporting all safety hazards and potential unsafe working conditions. Must actively participate in safety meetings.
- Must understand and comply with all current plant policies and procedures.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical/mechanical equipment failures.
- Utilize hand and pneumatic tools, welder, grinding machine, drill press and other related tools/equipment to perform major repairs.
- Test equipment as required to ensure properly working condition.
- Work with the Operators to learn the processes associated with operating an extruder and printing press.
- Perform die changes in extrusion.
- Perform preventative maintenance on all manufacturing equipment.
- Perform maintenance tasks, i.e. replacing electrical switches, current & voltage meters, replacing AC & DC motors, heater bands, temp controllers, thermocouples, solenoids, counters, and Vector drives.
- Monitor the chillers and air compressors.
- Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.
- Must possess ambition and make suggestions for improvement.
- Must have good interpersonal/leadership skills and be able to interface with all departments and associate levels.
- Must have good teamwork skills and be able to interface with all crew members and relief personnel and work toward resolving conflict congenially. Make an extra effort to deal with coworkers and supervisors on a mature and positive basis.
- Must have flexibility to accept additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Must be willing to work off-shifts, overtime and weekends as necessary for business needs.
- Willingness to travel since some travel may be required for training or support purposes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS SUBJECTED TO IN THIS POSITION:
- Inside environmental conditions protected from weather conditions, not necessarily temperature conditions.
- Inside and outside environments apply.
- Subject to extreme heat; temperatures above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
- Subject to noise, causing reason to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
- Subject to vibration, exposure, fluctuating movement of the body.
- Subject to hazards such as moving machinery, electrical currents, falling debris, exposure to chemicals, gases, high heat or explosives.
- Subject to oils and other cutting fluids via touch or air.
TRAINING:
The Mechanical Technician will be trained on safety, paperwork, machine operation, materials knowledge and housekeeping. The Mechanical Technician will need to learn the process of troubleshooting and repair of various equipment including extruders, printing presses, bag machines, separators, and other equipment used in the production of polyethylene blown film products.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION:
- Climbing, ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
- Balancing, maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
- Stooping, bending body downward and forward by bending spine and waist. Example: Changing paper in printer, copier machine.
- Kneeling, bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Crouching, bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Crawling, moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
- Reaching, extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Example: Giving signals, reaching for material or handle on item.
- Standing, particularly for sustained periods of time. Example: Making copies, giving presentations, directing traffic.
- Walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.
- Pushing, using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Pulling, using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting, raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
- DEGREE OF LIFTING: 51-100 lbs
- Fingering, picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling.
- Grasping, applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
- Feeling, perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; via face to face or telephone.
- Hearing, perceiving the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 db loss @ 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without correction. Ability to receive verbal communication and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.
- Repetitive motions, substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Example: Filing, sorting mail, starting ignition of machinery.
VISUAL ACTIVITY REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION:
- Machine operation, inspection, close assembly, clerical and administrative duties. Example: Preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, data entry, CRT exposure, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, using measurement devices or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.
- Machine operation and skilled trades; use of lathes, drills, presses, power tools to see where a job is at, or within, arms reach.
- Mobile equipment operations; operate cars, trucks, buses, fork lifts, cranes and high lift equipment.
- Other criteria based on accuracy and neatness of work.
- Example: Cleaning personnel, sweepers, janitors, cooks.
- Position requires individual to differentiate colors, depth and perception.
