Charleston Yacht is looking for an experienced Marine Generator & Mechanical Technician to join our growing service team.
We are specifically looking for someone who is strong at diagnosing, servicing, and repairing marine generators and mechanical systems.
If you are the kind of technician who can walk onto a boat, listen to what the customer is experiencing, systematically diagnose the problem, and figure out what actually needs to be repaired, we want to talk to you.
Our team already has specialized capabilities in marine electrical and HVAC. We are looking to add another strong technician who brings deeper mechanical and generator expertise to the team.
What You'll Work On
Your primary focus will include:
- Marine generator diagnostics, service, and repair
- Generator preventative maintenance
- Cooling systems
- Fuel systems
- Starting and charging systems related to generator operation
- Pumps, belts, hoses, filters, impellers, and related components
- Mechanical troubleshooting and repair
- Engine-related service and diagnostics based on experience
- Identifying developing problems before they become major failures
- Performing scheduled preventative maintenance
- Sea trials and operational testing when appropriate
Experience with brands such as Westerbeke, Kohler, Cummins/Onan, Northern Lights, or similar marine generator systems is highly valuable.

We are looking for an experienced technician, not simply someone who can replace parts.
You should be able to:
- Diagnose mechanical problems systematically
- Work independently without constant supervision
- Determine the root cause of a problem before recommending repairs
- Read and understand service manuals, diagrams, and technical documentation
- Communicate clearly about what you found and what the vessel needs
- Document work thoroughly so our Service Advisor can communicate recommendations to the customer
- Identify additional maintenance or repair needs while servicing a vessel
- Maintain an organized and professional work area
- Treat customers' boats with care
- Take pride in fixing things correctly the first time
Experience
Marine experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience with marine generators or diesel systems.
We are also interested in experienced generator, diesel, equipment, or mechanical technicians whose skills can transfer into the marine environment.
Manufacturer training or certifications are a plus, but demonstrated diagnostic ability matters more to us than a long list of credentials.
A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.

We are building a team with complementary strengths. We have specialized expertise in electrical and HVAC, general marine service capabilities, and a Service Advisor who coordinates work and communicates recommendations to customers.

Our goal is simple: find problems early, fix them correctly, communicate well, and make owning a boat easier for our customers.
Compensation
$32-$45+ per hour, depending on experience and capabilities.
We are willing to pay at the top of the range, or potentially above it, for a technician who can independently diagnose and repair complex marine generator and mechanical issues.
Full-time, year-round work.

This is a field-based position servicing vessels throughout Charleston-area marinas.
The position requires working aboard vessels, in engine rooms and other confined spaces, outdoors in Charleston weather, and occasionally lifting or moving equipment and components.
