Medical Laboratory Technician Jobs in West Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical laboratory technician in West Virginia?
West Virginia does not issue a separate state license for medical laboratory technicians, so employment depends on national certification. Most employers require ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) or AMT credentials, earned after completing an accredited associate degree program in clinical laboratory science or a related field. Programs at institutions such as West Virginia University and Mountwest Community and Technical College prepare graduates for the BOC exam and meet employer hiring standards across the state.
Which companies hire medical laboratory technicians in West Virginia?
Employers hiring medical laboratory technicians in West Virginia right now include Mon Health, WVU Medicine, and BOONE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. West Virginia's largest health systems, including WVU Medicine and Charleston Area Medical Center, are among the most consistent sources of openings in the state.
Which West Virginia cities have the most medical laboratory technician jobs?
Kingwood, Buckhannon, and Morgantown have the most medical laboratory technician openings in West Virginia. Charleston leads because it is home to major health systems and state public health facilities, while Morgantown's openings are driven by WVU Medicine and the academic medical infrastructure surrounding West Virginia University, and Huntington benefits from Marshall Health and Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Are there remote medical laboratory technician jobs in West Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. Medical laboratory technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring direct specimen handling and on-site instrument operation. About 0% of medical laboratory technician openings tied to West Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions tend to involve laboratory data review, results interpretation, or quality assurance coordination rather than bench work.
How can I get hired as a medical laboratory technician in West Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a laboratory assistant or phlebotomist role at a large West Virginia health system such as WVU Medicine or Thomas Health, where internal transfers into MLT positions are common. WVU Medicine and Charleston Area Medical Center periodically post new-graduate openings that accept candidates who are BOC exam-eligible but not yet certified. Completing an accredited MLT program with a clinical practicum component and sitting for the ASCP BOC exam immediately after graduation gives candidates the clearest competitive edge.
