Microbiology Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a microbiology in New York?
Most microbiology positions in New York require at minimum a bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, or a related science, while research and senior roles typically require a master's degree or PhD. Clinical laboratory microbiologists who perform diagnostic testing must hold a New York State clinical laboratory technologist license issued through the New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions, which requires an accredited degree and passing the required examination.
How much do microbiologies make in New York?
Microbiologies in New York earn a median of about $81,090 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,020 for the lowest 10% to over $134,960 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire microbiologys in New York?
Employers hiring microbiologys in New York right now include SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Cayuga Medical Center, and City University of New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of pharmaceutical companies, hospital systems, and public health agencies means hiring activity is spread across both private industry and government institutions throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most microbiology jobs?
The cities with the most microbiology openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Hauppauge. New York City drives the largest share of demand because it hosts major academic medical centers, biopharma offices, and public health agencies, while Albany's activity reflects the presence of New York State government health laboratories and nearby research institutions, and Long Island's openings are anchored by its pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing corridor.
Are there remote microbiology jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Microbiology work is largely hands-on and laboratory-based, which limits remote options significantly. About 0% of microbiology openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that do offer flexibility tend to be in regulatory affairs, scientific writing, data analysis, or quality systems roles rather than bench or clinical laboratory work.
How can I get hired as a microbiology in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a lab technician or research assistant role at a New York hospital system, contract research organization, or state public health facility, where hands-on skills are built on the job. Large employers such as NewYork-Presbyterian and New York City's public health laboratory system regularly post entry-level positions suited to recent graduates. Completing a New York State clinical laboratory technologist license, even while in an assistant role, gives candidates a clear credential advantage.
