Middle School Teacher Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a middle school teacher in Tennessee?
You earn a teaching license through the Tennessee Department of Education by completing a state-approved educator preparation program, passing the required Praxis Core Academic Skills assessments and the Praxis Subject Assessment for your content area, and submitting a licensure application. Candidates who already hold a bachelor's degree in another field can enter through Tennessee's alternative licensure route, which allows teaching under a transitional license while completing remaining requirements.
Which companies hire middle school teachers in Tennessee?
Companies currently hiring middle school teachers in Tennessee include Fort Madison Community School District, Freedom Preparatory Academy Charter Schools, and Rutherford County Schools, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Tennessee's large urban school districts and a growing network of public charter schools add consistent openings throughout the academic calendar, particularly before the fall semester.
Which Tennessee cities have the most middle school teacher jobs?
Nashville, Memphis, and Shelbyville account for the most middle school teacher openings in Tennessee. Nashville and Memphis lead because their metro-wide public school systems are among the largest employers in the state, while Knoxville's growth as a regional hub has steadily expanded Knox County Schools hiring, and smaller cities like Chattanooga reflect strong district investment tied to local economic development.
Are there remote middle school teacher jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're rare. About 50% of middle school teacher openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how heavily the role depends on in-person instruction and daily student interaction. The portions of the role most likely to appear in a remote or hybrid format are virtual academy positions, curriculum development contracts, or instructional coaching roles with established Tennessee online school programs.
How can I get hired as a middle school teacher in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is Tennessee's Transitional License, which lets candidates with a bachelor's degree teach while completing remaining licensure requirements. Large districts including Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and Shelby County Schools run residency and grow-your-own programs specifically for candidates without classroom experience. Paraprofessional or instructional aide roles within those same districts are a common lateral move, and completing the edTPA portfolio during preparation gives first-time candidates a measurable edge in competitive hiring cycles.
Where can I find and apply to middle school teacher jobs in Tennessee?
