Middle School Teacher Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a middle school teacher in California?
To become a middle school teacher in California, you must earn a teaching credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). The standard path is a bachelor's degree in an academic subject, completion of a CTC-approved teacher preparation program that includes supervised student teaching, passage of the CBEST for basic skills, and passage of the CSET to verify subject-matter competency. Once those are complete, you apply directly to the CTC for your credential before accepting a classroom position.
How much do middle school teachers make in California?
Middle school teachers in California earn a median of about $98,950 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,410 for the lowest 10% to over $129,500 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire middle school teachers in California?
Employers hiring middle school teachers in California right now include San Francisco Unified School District, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and Kipp Nashville, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large urban districts and well-funded charter networks such as KIPP SoCal and Aspire Public Schools maintain consistent hiring pipelines throughout the school year.
Which California cities have the most middle school teacher jobs?
San Francisco, Oakland, and Los Angeles have the most middle school teacher openings in California. Los Angeles dominates by sheer district size, while San Diego and San Jose reflect large urban systems with diverse student populations and ongoing credentialed-teacher shortages, particularly in STEM and special education subjects.
Are there remote middle school teacher jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Middle school teaching is fundamentally an in-person role, so fully remote positions are limited to a small number of accredited online schools and virtual charter programs. About 0% of middle school teacher openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the positions that do exist remotely tend to be in elective or supplemental subjects rather than core classroom instruction.
How can I get hired as a middle school teacher in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an intern teaching credential through the CTC, which lets you teach in a California classroom while completing your preparation program, so you gain paid experience before holding a full credential. Large districts such as Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified run their own teacher residency programs that pair candidates with mentor teachers for a full school year. Substitute teaching or a paraprofessional role within a district is also a direct door in, and completing your CSET subject-matter exams early signals readiness to hiring principals even before student teaching is finished.
Where can I find and apply to middle school teacher jobs in California?
You can find and apply to middle school teacher jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your credential area and experience level and apply directly to the employer from the listing.
