Middle School Teacher Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a middle school teacher in Pennsylvania?
You earn an Instructional I certificate through the Pennsylvania Department of Education by completing an approved educator preparation program, passing the required Praxis Core Academic Skills assessments and the relevant Praxis Subject Assessment for your content area, and submitting a background clearance package. Most candidates hold a bachelor's degree in education or a related subject. After three years of satisfactory teaching, you can apply for the permanent Instructional II certificate.
Which companies hire middle school teachers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring middle school teachers in Pennsylvania right now include Colonial Intermediate Unit 20, School District of Philadelphia, and West Chester Area School District, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's mix of large urban districts, suburban districts, charter networks, and Catholic diocesan schools means openings are spread across employer types throughout the state.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most middle school teacher jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Bethlehem have the most middle school teacher openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia dominates because of the sheer size of its public district and the dense concentration of charter and private schools around it, while Pittsburgh's sizable district and Allentown's fast-growing Lehigh Valley population drive consistent hiring in those metros.
Are there remote middle school teacher jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of middle school teacher openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how fundamentally in-person the role is. The small share of remote positions typically involves online charter schools or district-run virtual academies, where teachers deliver live instruction through a digital platform rather than a traditional classroom.
How can I get hired as a middle school teacher in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most direct entry path is completing a Pennsylvania-approved student teaching placement, which many districts treat as a direct pipeline to hire. Urban districts like the School District of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Public Schools regularly recruit new graduates and offer induction programs that pair first-year teachers with mentors. Candidates who hold a Pennsylvania Instructional I certificate and demonstrate content-area strength through their Praxis scores are competitive even without classroom experience. Serving as a paraeducator or substitute teacher within a target district is also a proven way to build relationships and move into a full-time position.
