How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Audit Manager
Target firms with established OPT hiring pipelines
The Big Four and large regional accounting firms sponsor OPT students regularly and have HR processes built for it. Smaller boutique firms may be willing but lack experience, which creates delays that eat into your authorization window.
Clarify your CPA progress upfront
Many Audit Manager roles require or strongly prefer a CPA license. If you're in progress, say so clearly in your application. Firms sponsoring international candidates want to know you're on a defined path, not starting from scratch.
Apply early relative to your OPT start date
Audit hiring cycles at large firms often run six to nine months ahead of start dates. If your OPT begins in the fall, target applications the prior spring to align with when firms are actively making sponsorship decisions for that period.
Emphasize compliance and regulatory knowledge from your home country
International audit experience with IFRS or local regulatory frameworks is genuinely valuable in cross-border audit teams. Frame this as additive expertise, not a workaround for domestic experience gaps, to stand out against U.S.-only candidates.
Understand the STEM OPT extension eligibility for your degree
Accounting degrees from STEM-designated programs qualify for the 24-month extension, but not all programs carry that designation. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO before assuming you have 36 months of total OPT availability.
Negotiate your start date around EAD card receipt, not application
Your OPT employment authorization begins on the EAD card start date, not when USCIS receives your application. Build at least 90 days into any offer negotiation to account for processing time and avoid starting before authorization is confirmed.

Can F-1 OPT students work as Audit Managers in the United States?
Yes. Audit Manager is a qualifying specialty occupation for OPT work authorization, provided your degree is in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. The role must be directly related to your major. Public accounting firms and corporate internal audit departments both regularly employ OPT students in this capacity, though the role typically requires prior audit experience.
Do Audit Manager roles typically lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Large public accounting firms and corporations with formal immigration programs do sponsor Audit Managers for H-1B visas after OPT. The H-1B lottery runs once per year with a April 1 filing deadline, so your OPT timeline needs to overlap with at least one lottery cycle. Smaller firms may be willing but less prepared to navigate the process quickly. Browse Audit Manager roles on Migrate Mate to identify employers with sponsorship history.
Does an accounting degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension as an Audit Manager?
It depends on whether your specific program carries a STEM CIP code designation. Some accounting and management information systems programs qualify, but traditional accounting degrees often do not. Check with your Designated School Official to confirm your program's status before counting on the 24-month extension. If your degree is in data analytics, management science, or a STEM-adjacent field, extension eligibility is more likely.
What documents does an employer need to hire an Audit Manager on OPT?
Your employer needs to complete the I-9 employment eligibility verification using your EAD card and passport. They do not file any petition with USCIS on your behalf during OPT. You are responsible for reporting the job to your DSO within 10 days of starting. The employer must confirm the role is related to your field of study, as unrelated employment counts against your OPT usage and can create status issues.
Are CPA requirements a barrier to getting an Audit Manager job on OPT?
At the Manager level, many firms expect candidates to be CPA-licensed or close to it. International students who passed CPA exams in their home country may need to verify whether those credentials are recognized by the relevant U.S. state board. Some firms will hire Audit Managers without a U.S. CPA if the candidate has strong relevant experience, particularly in internal audit or industry roles rather than public accounting.
