Cardiologist Jobs for OPT Students
Cardiologist roles on OPT require USCIS-authorized work in a specialty occupation, which cardiology clearly satisfies given its mandatory MD and residency credentials. Most positions are at hospitals or academic medical centers that are experienced with J-1 and H-1B sponsorship, making them well-positioned to support your OPT period and transition.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Cardiologist
Target teaching hospitals and academic medical centers
Academic medical centers and university-affiliated hospitals routinely hire international physicians and understand OPT work authorization. These institutions have dedicated HR and immigration teams, making the transition from OPT to H-1B or J-1 waiver sponsorship significantly smoother than community hospitals.
Confirm your OPT is authorized for your specific role
Your OPT authorization must match the field on your I-20. Cardiology fellows and residents should verify their EAD reflects the correct occupational category before starting. Any mismatch between your authorized field and job duties can jeopardize your status during USCIS review.
Apply early to account for credentialing timelines
Hospital credentialing for physicians takes 60 to 90 days on average. Applying well before your OPT start date ensures credentialing completes before you begin practicing, preventing gaps that could trigger compliance issues with your authorized employment period.
Ask directly about H-1B or J-1 waiver sponsorship intent
Raise sponsorship during later interview stages, not initial screening. Ask whether the institution has sponsored international physicians before and whether they support J-1 waiver programs through Conrad 30 or the VA, which are common transition paths for cardiology fellows.
Document all moonlighting and locum work carefully
OPT restricts you to employment directly tied to your authorized field. Cardiology moonlighting or locum arrangements count as concurrent employment and must appear on your EAD record. Undisclosed concurrent positions can create serious authorization problems during an H-1B petition.
Prioritize employers familiar with physician immigration timelines
Not all healthcare employers understand that cardiology fellows on OPT face hard H-1B filing deadlines. Employers who have previously sponsored physicians will plan around cap deadlines and premium processing windows, reducing the risk of a gap in your authorized employment.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Cardiologist on OPT?
Yes, cardiology qualifies as a specialty occupation under OPT rules because it requires a medical degree, residency, and fellowship training in a directly related field. Your EAD must be valid before you begin any clinical work, and your job duties must fall within the field listed on your I-20. Fellowship programs and attending positions at ACGME-accredited institutions are both eligible.
How do I find Cardiologist jobs that support OPT and future visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Cardiologist positions from employers experienced with international physician hiring, including those that sponsor H-1B and J-1 waivers. Filtering by sponsorship willingness saves significant time compared to researching each institution individually. Academic medical centers and VA-affiliated hospitals are historically the most sponsorship-friendly options for cardiology fellows transitioning off OPT.
Does cardiology STEM OPT extension apply to my degree?
STEM OPT extension is tied to your degree's CIP code, not your job title. Most MD programs do not fall under a STEM-designated CIP code, meaning the 24-month STEM extension is generally unavailable to medical doctors. However, if your undergraduate or master's degree was in a STEM field, that degree could potentially support a separate STEM OPT period depending on your situation.
What happens to my OPT if my cardiology fellowship ends before I secure an H-1B?
If your fellowship ends and you do not have another authorized OPT position lined up, your OPT period continues running but you enter an unemployment clock that is capped at 90 days total. Exceeding 90 days of unemployment during OPT violates your status. Securing an attending position or a second fellowship before your fellowship ends is critical to maintaining continuous authorization.
Can I work at multiple hospitals on OPT as a Cardiologist?
You can hold concurrent positions on OPT, but each employer must be authorized under your EAD and must fall within your approved field of study. Cardiology consulting arrangements, locum tenens work, and moonlighting at a second hospital all count as concurrent employment. Failing to report or properly document multiple positions can create compliance issues if USCIS reviews your employment history during an H-1B filing.
