How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Chief Administrative Officer
Target organizations with H-1B sponsorship history
Large corporations, hospital systems, and universities file H-1B petitions far more often than small businesses. An employer with a documented sponsorship history is far more likely to sponsor a CAO than one encountering the process for the first time.
Lead with operational impact, not immigration need
Executives who frame their value around cost reduction, cross-functional efficiency, and organizational scale attract sponsors faster. Quantify what you've delivered in prior roles before any conversation about visa status reaches the table.
Engage directly with boards and C-suite decision-makers
CAO hiring decisions are made at the board or CEO level, not by HR alone. Building relationships with those principals before a role is posted increases the likelihood that sponsorship gets approved as part of the offer negotiation.
Address sponsorship directly and early in executive conversations
At the CAO level, raising your OPT status early signals confidence and professionalism. Employers who won't sponsor typically say so immediately, saving both sides time and letting you focus on organizations that will.

Can I work as a Chief Administrative Officer on OPT?
Yes, OPT authorizes you to work in any role directly related to your degree field, including executive positions like Chief Administrative Officer. CAO roles typically require degrees in business administration, management, public administration, or a related field. Your position must align with your area of study, which most CAO roles satisfy given the breadth of business degrees.
How long does OPT work authorization last for a CAO role?
Standard OPT provides 12 months of work authorization after graduation. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as management science or business analytics, you may qualify for a 24-month extension, giving you up to 36 months total. At the CAO level, that extended runway is often enough time to secure H-1B sponsorship through your employer.
What happens to my OPT if I switch employers in a CAO role?
You can change employers on OPT without filing a new petition, but you must update your SEVIS record through your DSO within 10 days. The new CAO role still needs to relate to your degree field. If you're on a STEM OPT extension, your new employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, so confirm that before accepting an offer.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor a Chief Administrative Officer for an H-1B?
Large healthcare systems, Fortune 500 corporations, research universities, and established nonprofits sponsor CAOs most frequently. These organizations have dedicated immigration counsel and established HR processes for H-1B filings. Smaller organizations often lack both the infrastructure and budget to manage executive-level sponsorship. You can filter by sponsoring employer type on Migrate Mate to focus your search effectively.
Does a Chief Administrative Officer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not your job title. If your underlying degree falls under a STEM-designated CIP code, such as management science, operations research, or business analytics, you may qualify for the extension regardless of your job title. A general business administration or MBA degree may not qualify. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before assuming eligibility.
