OPT Consultant Jobs
Consultant roles on OPT require employers to file an LCA with the Department of Labor, confirming the position qualifies as a specialty occupation. Most consulting positions in management, technology, and strategy meet that standard. Your 12-month OPT window is extendable to 36 months with a STEM extension if your degree qualifies.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Consultant
Target consulting firms with established OPT hiring
Large management and technology consulting firms hire OPT students regularly and have dedicated immigration processes. Smaller boutique firms may be willing but slower. Prioritize employers with a documented track record of sponsoring international consultants to avoid delays in your authorization.
Confirm your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
Consulting titles vary widely. A strategy analyst role with defined degree requirements qualifies more cleanly than a general business consultant role. Ask the recruiter how the position is classified on the LCA before accepting an offer to avoid authorization issues later.
Apply before your OPT start date approaches
Consulting firms run structured recruiting cycles months in advance. If your OPT authorization is pending or recently approved, apply early. Starting the employment paperwork late creates gaps that can interrupt your authorized period and complicate your status.
Understand how client site placements affect your authorization
Many consultants work at client sites rather than employer offices. Your OPT authorization covers the employer, not the client location. Confirm the firm's process for managing client-site work so your authorized employment relationship remains clearly documented throughout the engagement.
Pursue a STEM OPT extension if your degree qualifies
Degrees in engineering, computer science, mathematics, and related STEM fields qualify for a 24-month OPT extension. Consulting roles at qualifying employers make you eligible. Apply at least 90 days before your standard OPT expires to avoid any gap in work authorization.
Be transparent with recruiters about your timeline
Tell recruiters upfront when your OPT expires and whether a STEM extension applies. Firms with active H-1B visa sponsorship pipelines will factor this into offers. Hiding timeline constraints tends to create problems at the offer stage, not resolve them.
Consultant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Consultant on OPT?
Yes, consulting roles generally qualify for OPT work authorization as long as the position meets the specialty occupation standard, meaning it requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Management consulting, technology consulting, and strategy roles typically qualify. Confirm with your employer that the position will be classified correctly on the Labor Condition Application before your start date.
Does consulting work at client sites affect my OPT status?
Your OPT authorization is tied to your employer, not the physical work location. Working at a client site is common in consulting and does not invalidate your authorization. However, your employer must remain your legal employer of record throughout. If you move between client engagements, ensure your employer maintains the documentation connecting you to their authorized OPT filing.
Where can I find Consultant jobs that support OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists consulting roles from employers who actively hire and support OPT students. Browsing on Migrate Mate lets you filter for roles relevant to your field and graduation timeline, so you're not wasting time applying to firms that won't consider candidates requiring OPT work authorization.
Does my consulting degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your specific degree, not the job title. Engineering, computer science, information systems, mathematics, and related STEM degrees qualify for the 24-month extension. A management or business degree typically does not. Check the official STEM Designated Degree Program list maintained by ICE to confirm whether your degree classification qualifies before planning your timeline.
What happens to my OPT if my consulting project ends between client engagements?
OPT allows up to 90 days of unemployment across your authorized period (150 days with an approved STEM extension). Gaps between consulting engagements count toward that limit only if you're no longer employed by the sponsoring firm. If your employer retains you on payroll between projects, you remain in authorized status and the unemployment clock does not run.
