How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Clinical Partner
Confirm your CIP code qualifies for STEM OPT
Not all health sciences degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Check your program's CIP code against the DHS STEM designated degree list before applying, so you know your authorized work period upfront.
Target hospital systems with established OPT hiring pipelines
Large academic medical centers and health systems, such as Mayo Clinic and Kaiser Permanente, regularly hire international students on OPT. They have HR infrastructure to handle EAD verification and understand clinical OPT timelines better than smaller practices.
Apply early relative to your OPT start date
Clinical hiring moves slower than most industries due to credentialing and background checks. Begin applications at least 60 to 90 days before your OPT authorization begins so your start date aligns with employer onboarding timelines.
Clarify your EAD card details during the offer stage
Bring your EAD card and I-20 to offer discussions. Employers will need to verify your employment authorization category and expiration date for Form I-9 compliance before your first clinical shift begins.
Understand the 90-day unemployment rule during your OPT period
OPT students may not accumulate more than 90 days of unemployment, or 150 days on a STEM extension. Clinical Partner contract gaps between assignments count toward this limit, so track your employment continuity carefully.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Partner role qualify as authorized employment under OPT?
Yes, as long as the work is directly related to your degree field. A Clinical Partner position must connect to your major, such as nursing, health sciences, or a biomedical discipline. Your DSO can confirm the match. Roles that are purely administrative without clinical components may not satisfy the OPT employment requirement, so verify the job description aligns with your coursework before accepting.
Can I work as a Clinical Partner through a staffing agency on OPT?
Yes. OPT permits employment through staffing agencies and contracted placements, provided the work remains related to your degree. Each new assignment should be reported to your DSO, and you must ensure there are no gaps between placements exceeding 90 days in total across your OPT period. Agency roles are common in clinical settings and are fully compatible with standard OPT authorization.
Where can I find Clinical Partner jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters roles by sponsorship and work authorization compatibility. Searching on Migrate Mate lets you focus on Clinical Partner openings where employers have already indicated willingness to hire on OPT or EAD, saving time you would otherwise spend screening out roles that require permanent work authorization.
What happens to my OPT if my Clinical Partner employer goes through layoffs?
Your OPT status does not immediately terminate if you are laid off, but your unemployment clock starts immediately. You have a maximum of 90 days of unemployment on standard OPT, or 150 days on a STEM extension. Notify your DSO promptly, document your layoff date, and begin job searching right away. Finding a new qualifying role before the limit is reached protects your status.
Can a Clinical Partner job lead to H-1B sponsorship?
It depends on the employer. Clinical Partner roles at large hospital systems and academic medical centers are more likely to have H-1B sponsorship infrastructure than smaller clinics. Some clinical titles also qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B if a specific degree is required for the position. Using your OPT period to demonstrate value to an employer is the most practical path toward securing an H-1B petition.
