Target healthcare systems and large health IT vendors
Hospital networks, health plans, and companies like Epic or Cerner have established HR and legal teams that handle OPT and H-1B sponsorship routinely. Smaller clinics rarely have the infrastructure to sponsor international employees.
Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT extension
Health Informatics and Health Information Management programs often carry a STEM designation, giving you 24 extra months of OPT. Verify your program's CIP code with your DSO before applying, since not all HIT programs qualify automatically.
Lead with your EHR and interoperability skills
Employers prioritize candidates with hands-on experience in Epic, Cerner, or HL7 and FHIR standards. Listing these credentials prominently signals technical readiness and reduces perceived hiring risk for sponsors evaluating OPT candidates.
Research employers through government H-1B disclosure data
The Department of Labor's public OFLC disclosure database lists every certified LCA by employer and job title. Searching for Health Information Technology or Health Informatics roles confirms which organizations consistently sponsor and at what volume.
Address OPT timing directly in your cover letter
State your OPT start date, expiration date, and whether you qualify for STEM extension. Employers hesitate when authorization timelines are unclear, so providing this upfront removes a common objection before the first interview.
Pursue roles tied to government or federally funded healthcare programs
Organizations implementing CMS programs, Medicaid systems, or federal health exchanges often hire HIT professionals urgently and have compliance teams already familiar with work authorization requirements, making sponsorship conversations more straightforward.
Health Information Technology OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Health Information Technology jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Many do, but it depends on your specific degree program. Health Informatics, Health Information Management, and Biomedical Informatics programs frequently carry a STEM CIP code designation. Degrees in general Healthcare Administration often do not. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO before assuming you qualify, since STEM eligibility is tied to the program, not the job title.
Which employers in healthcare IT actively sponsor OPT and H-1B visas?
Large hospital systems, health insurance companies, and healthcare IT platform companies have the most consistent sponsorship track records. You can verify which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for Health Information Technology roles using the DOL's OFLC disclosure data. Migrate Mate also filters HIT jobs by sponsorship history, so you can browse opportunities from employers already familiar with the process.
Can I work as a Health IT contractor or consultant on OPT?
Yes, but with an important constraint. OPT requires a bona fide employer-employee relationship, meaning a staffing agency or consulting firm must be your employer of record, not just a placement intermediary. Self-employment and independent contracting are not permitted on OPT. If a role is structured as a third-party placement, confirm the staffing firm will serve as your direct employer and handle your payroll.
How do I explain my OPT work authorization to a healthcare employer unfamiliar with it?
Be direct and specific. Tell them your OPT authorization period, your exact end date, whether you qualify for a STEM extension, and that the H-1B process begins in April for an October start. Healthcare organizations with compliance or HR teams experienced in credentialing generally handle work authorization questions well. Provide a one-page OPT summary document if you sense the recruiter is unfamiliar with the process.
What degree fields support an OPT application for Health Information Technology roles?
Health Informatics, Health Information Management, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science with a healthcare focus, and Information Systems degrees are the most commonly accepted. Some employers also consider degrees in Public Health or Healthcare Administration if your coursework included substantial IT or data components. Your degree field must be directly related to the job under OPT rules, so document the connection clearly in your application materials.
