TEAM DESCRIPTION
The AI Foundations team is at the center of bringing our vision for AI at Capital One to life. Our work touches every aspect of the research life cycle, from partnering with Academia to building production systems. We work with product, technology and business leaders to apply the state of the art in AI to our business.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Partner with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers and product managers to deliver AI-powered products that change how customers interact with their money.
- Leverage a broad stack of technologies — Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, and more — to reveal the insights hidden within huge volumes of numeric and textual data.
- Build AI foundation models through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation.
- Engage in high impact applied research to take the latest AI developments and push them into the next generation of customer experiences.
- Flex your interpersonal skills to translate the complexity of your work into tangible business goals.
- Collaborate with senior researchers to prepare internal tech reports or conference submissions summarizing novel methods or findings.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields, with an exception that required degree will be obtained on or before the scheduled start date or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields plus 2 years of experience in Applied Research.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or related fields.
- LLM
- PhD focus on NLP or Masters with 5 years of industrial NLP research experience.
- Multiple publications on topics related to the pre-training of large language models (e.g. technical reports of pre-trained LLMs, SSL techniques, model pre-training optimization).
- Member of team that has trained a large language model from scratch (10B + parameters, 500B+ tokens).
- Publications in deep learning theory.
- Publications at ACL, NAACL and EMNLP, Neurips, ICML or ICLR.
- Optimization (Training & Inference)
- PhD focused on topics related to optimizing training of very large deep learning models.
- Multiple years of experience and/or publications on one of the following topics: Model Sparsification, Quantization, Training Parallelism/Partitioning Design, Gradient Checkpointing, Model Compression.
- Experience optimizing training for a 10B+ model.

- PhD focused on topics related to guiding LLMs with further tasks (Supervised Finetuning, Instruction-Tuning, Dialogue-Finetuning, Parameter Tuning).

- The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Confirm your STEM OPT eligibility early
CRA roles typically require degrees in life sciences, public health, or biomedical fields. Verify with your DSO whether your specific program qualifies for the 24-month STEM extension before you apply, not after you receive an offer.
Highlight GCP certification on your resume
Good Clinical Practice certification signals readiness to employers and reduces onboarding costs. Candidates who are already GCP-certified are easier to sponsor because employers see a lower training investment relative to the visa overhead.
Be upfront about your OPT end date
CRA hiring cycles can run three to six months. Disclosing your authorization timeline early lets employers assess whether sponsorship is feasible before both parties invest heavily in the interview process. Surprises late in the process hurt everyone.
Prioritize roles with travel requirements

Clinical Research Associate OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Clinical Research Associate jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. CRA roles themselves are not automatically STEM-designated. If your degree is in a STEM-classified field such as biology, biochemistry, public health, or biomedical engineering, you may qualify for the 24-month extension. Confirm your program's CIP code with your DSO before factoring the extension into your job search timeline.
How much time on OPT is enough to realistically get sponsored as a CRA?
Most CRA hiring processes take two to four months, and H-1B petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. If you have less than eight months of OPT remaining when you begin applying, your window is tight. Candidates with STEM OPT extensions are in a much stronger position since they have enough runway for sponsorship without cap-gap risk.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor CRAs on OPT?
Large contract research organizations are the most consistent sponsors because they hire CRAs in volume and have existing legal processes for H-1B filings. Mid-to-large pharmaceutical companies also sponsor regularly. Small biotech startups and independent site management organizations are less likely to have the legal infrastructure or budget to support sponsorship. Can I work as a CRA while on OPT if the role requires frequent travel?
Yes. Domestic travel does not affect your OPT authorization as long as you remain employed with your authorized employer and your work is directly related to your degree field. International travel is more complex: re-entering the U.S. requires a valid visa stamp, a current EAD, and a valid I-20 with a recent travel signature from your DSO.
