Verify your degree qualifies for STEM OPT
Au.D. programs fall under CIP code 51.0204, which qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your DSO has the correct CIP code on your I-20 before your initial OPT period ends.
Target employers already enrolled in E-Verify
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be E-Verify enrolled. Hospitals, VA medical centers, and large audiology networks are far more likely to meet this requirement than solo private practices.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
STEM OPT training plans must show your compensation meets prevailing wage standards. Pull the wage level for SOC code 29-1181 in your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before you sign an offer.
File your STEM OPT extension 90 days before expiration
USCIS recommends submitting Form I-765 at least 90 days before your current EAD expires. A timely filing keeps you authorized to keep working while the application is pending, even if your EAD card has already expired.
Use Migrate Mate to identify sponsoring employers
Finding audiology employers with active H-1B filing history takes the guesswork out of your job search. Migrate Mate surfaces employers in this field who have sponsored work visas, so you can focus your applications where sponsorship is realistic.
Audiologist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Au.D. degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes. The Doctor of Audiology degree is classified under CIP code 51.0204, which is included on the STEM Designated Degree Program list. That makes Au.D. graduates eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, provided your employer is enrolled in E-Verify and you file Form I-765 before your initial OPT period expires.
Does audiology qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Audiology meets the USCIS specialty occupation standard because the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, and in practice the industry standard is an Au.D. Employers filing an H-1B for an audiologist position need to document that the role requires this level of education, which most clinical audiology jobs do by definition.
Can I work in a school district as an audiologist on OPT?
Yes, but school districts often operate on academic-year contracts, which creates an unemployment gap risk. OPT students are limited to 90 days of unemployment during their authorization period, so a summer gap without a follow-on contract could count against that limit. Confirm how the district handles year-round employment status before accepting an offer.
How do I find audiology employers who sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter audiology roles by employers with visa sponsorship history, so you're not sending applications to clinics that have never navigated work authorization. Hospitals, multi-location audiology groups, and university medical centers tend to have the HR infrastructure to support OPT and eventual H-1B sponsorship.
What does a STEM OPT training plan need to include for an audiology role?
Your employer must complete Form I-983, which documents your learning objectives, supervision structure, and how the role relates to your Au.D. degree. The training plan must show your compensation meets the prevailing wage for your location, which you can verify using the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 29-1181. Your DSO reviews and approves the plan before you submit to USCIS.
