INTRODUCTION
Passionate, driven people dedicated to making a difference in healthcare.
Are you looking for an opportunity to get into the growing health care field? Look no further, we will train you! SpecialtyCare provides a comprehensive in-house training program that will help you gain valuable skills and a career in health care. SpecialtyCare autotransfusion technicians play a vital role in the health and well-being of our patients. Autotransfusion, also called cell salvage, is the process of collecting shed blood, separating the red cells from the plasma, washing the red cells, and re-administering them to the patient.
As a Clinical Technician in Autotransfusion with SpecialtyCare, you will be trained to run the equipment that purifies the patient’s blood and then returns the blood to the patient. Recycling the patient’s own blood, instead of transfusing donor blood, has been shown to reduce recovery time and prevents the adverse effects that can occur with donor blood. We also provide cell-based therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate.
Make a difference in patient’s lives…train to be an Autotransfusion Clinical Technician!

Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT
Clinical Technician roles typically qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in biomedical engineering, clinical laboratory science, or a related STEM field. Verify your program's CIP code with your DSO before applying.
Target hospital systems and medical device companies
Large hospital networks and medical device manufacturers like Medtronic, Stryker, and Abbott have structured HR processes and are more experienced with OPT work authorization than smaller clinics or independent practices.
Be upfront about your OPT timeline early
Mention your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility in your first recruiter conversation. Hiring managers need time to assess sponsorship pathways, and early transparency prevents wasted effort on both sides.
Highlight any clinical certifications you hold
Credentials like CBET, CET, or phlebotomy certification signal readiness for regulated clinical environments. Employers weighing OPT overhead are more likely to move forward with candidates who demonstrate immediate technical competency.
Ask about the employer's H-1B sponsorship history
Before accepting an offer, ask HR whether they have sponsored H-1B visas for clinical or technical roles before. Past sponsorship is the strongest indicator they will do it again when your OPT expires.
Prepare a concise OPT explanation for interviews
Many clinical hiring managers are unfamiliar with F-1 OPT. Have a two- or three-sentence explanation ready: what OPT is, how long your authorization lasts, and that no employer action is required to start work.
Clinical Technician OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Clinical Technician jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most do, but it depends on your degree field, not the job title itself. If your degree is in biomedical engineering, clinical laboratory science, or another STEM-designated field, you can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension through your DSO. The employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify and sign a formal training plan.
How do I find Clinical Technician employers who are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters job listings by sponsorship and OPT-friendliness, so you're not wasting applications on employers who won't consider work authorization. Browse Clinical Technician roles directly on Migrate Mate to find employers who have already indicated openness to OPT candidates.
Can I start a Clinical Technician job before my EAD card arrives?
No. You cannot begin work until your Employment Authorization Document is in hand, regardless of your program end date or when your OPT period officially starts. Do not accept a start date earlier than your EAD arrival. Processing times from USCIS currently range from three to five months, so apply as early as your DSO allows.
Does working as a Clinical Technician count as a valid OPT job for status purposes?
Yes, as long as the role is directly related to your degree field. A biomedical engineering graduate working as a clinical equipment technician clearly satisfies the requirement. If your degree is in a broader science field, document how your daily responsibilities connect to your coursework. Your DSO can help you assess whether a specific offer qualifies.
What happens to my OPT if my Clinical Technician contract ends before my EAD expires?
F-1 OPT allows a cumulative unemployment buffer of 90 days during the standard OPT period, reduced to 60 days during the STEM extension. If your contract ends, that buffer starts counting immediately. Report the change to your DSO right away and begin searching for a new qualifying role as quickly as possible to stay within your authorized status.
