How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Computer Science
Apply before your OPT start date
Most CS hiring cycles take eight to twelve weeks from application to offer. Start applying three to four months before your OPT begins so your authorization is active when you're ready to start work.
Emphasize your STEM OPT runway in outreach
Hiring managers often assume OPT students have only 12 months. Clearly communicate in cover letters and recruiter emails that CS graduates qualify for a 24-month STEM extension, giving employers three full years.
Prioritize roles with degree-specific job descriptions
USCIS requires your job duties to relate directly to your CS degree. Roles explicitly requiring a computer science or engineering background are easier to authorize and less likely to trigger compliance issues later.
Understand the 90-day unemployment rule
OPT allows a maximum of 90 days of unemployment, cumulative across the full 12-month period. During a CS job search, track your gap days carefully and keep documentation showing active application activity.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for sponsoring employers
Not every company that posts a CS role will sponsor work authorization. Migrate Mate's job board filters for employers actively open to OPT students, saving you hours of researching sponsorship policies manually.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do computer science jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes. Computer science is a STEM-designated field under the DHS STEM list, which means graduates with a CS degree working in a directly related role can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Combined with the initial 12-month OPT period, you get up to three years of work authorization. Your employer must be E-Verify enrolled and sign a formal training plan.
What types of computer science roles are most OPT-friendly?
Software engineering, data science, machine learning, backend development, and cloud infrastructure roles are consistently the most OPT-friendly because they require a CS-specific degree by nature. These job descriptions naturally satisfy USCIS's requirement that your role relate directly to your field of study. Roles in product management or business analysis may be harder to authorize under a CS degree even at tech companies. Browse Migrate Mate to find CS roles already filtered for OPT-eligible employers.
Can I do contract or freelance computer science work on OPT?
Yes, but with strict conditions. OPT permits self-employment and contract work as long as each engagement is related to your CS degree and you work at least 20 hours per week on average. You must be able to document each contract engagement. For STEM OPT, self-employment is not permitted. You must have a qualifying employer who can supervise and sign your training plan.
How do I know if a computer science employer will sponsor H-1B after OPT?
The strongest signal is prior H-1B filing history. Employers who have filed multiple H-1B petitions for software engineers or data scientists in recent years are far more likely to sponsor you. You can cross-reference this through USCIS H-1B employer data reports, which are publicly available. During interviews, ask directly about their immigration support process and whether they work with outside immigration counsel.
What happens if I lose my computer science job while on OPT?
You enter an unemployment period, and the clock starts counting toward your 90-day cumulative limit. During that window you should actively document your job search. If you secure a new CS role within the limit, you can continue your OPT without interruption. Losing a job while on STEM OPT follows the same rule, and your new employer must also be E-Verify enrolled and sign a new training plan before you begin.
