How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Power Apps Developer
Target Microsoft ecosystem employers
Companies that have standardized on Microsoft 365 and Azure tend to have dedicated Power Platform teams and recurring H-1B sponsorship histories. Focus your search on mid-size to enterprise firms in consulting, finance, and healthcare.
Get Microsoft Power Apps certified
The PL-900 and PL-400 certifications signal verified competency to hiring managers. Certified candidates stand out in applicant pools and demonstrate the kind of measurable skill that helps employers justify the sponsorship process to their HR teams.
Clarify your OPT timeline upfront
STEM OPT extension applicants can work for up to three years total on F-1 status. Communicating this clearly to recruiters removes the assumption that your authorization expires quickly and gives employers confidence in the hiring investment.
Highlight enterprise automation outcomes
Quantify what your Power Apps solutions actually did, such as reducing manual processes or cutting approval cycle times. Employers sponsoring visas want evidence of business impact, not just familiarity with the platform.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Power Apps Developer qualify as a STEM OPT role?
Yes, Power Apps Developer roles typically qualify for the STEM OPT extension because they fall under computer science, information systems, or computer and information research science CIP codes. That means eligible F-1 students can work for up to three years on OPT. You need to confirm your degree is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List and that your employer agrees to meet the formal training plan requirements.
Do Power Apps Developer employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas?
Many do, particularly large consulting firms, Microsoft solution partners, and enterprise technology departments in sectors like finance, healthcare, and logistics. Power Platform development is classified as a specialty occupation because it requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field. You can browse Power Apps Developer roles from verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate.
Can I work as a Power Apps Developer on day one of OPT?
Yes, as long as your OPT employment authorization document has been approved and your start date has arrived. Your role must be directly related to your field of study, so a computer science or information systems background supports this clearly. Keep a copy of your EAD and offer letter together, as employers may request both for their I-9 records.
What happens if my OPT expires before my H-1B is approved?
If your employer files your H-1B petition by April 1 and USCIS selects it in the lottery, you may be protected by cap-gap coverage, which extends your F-1 status and work authorization through September 30. You need to remain continuously employed by the same petitioning employer during cap-gap. Gaps in employment during this period can complicate your status, so planning the transition carefully with your DSO matters.
What degree backgrounds qualify OPT students for Power Apps Developer roles?
Computer science, management information systems, software engineering, and business information technology are the most directly relevant backgrounds. Some employers also consider degrees in data analytics or electrical engineering if the candidate has demonstrated Power Platform experience. The key is that your degree program is listed as STEM-eligible, which is what determines your OPT extension eligibility, not just your job title.
