How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Construction Manager
Target firms with H-1B sponsorship history
Large general contractors and engineering firms like Turner Construction, Bechtel, and AECOM regularly sponsor H-1B visas. Search OFLC disclosure data to verify which construction employers have filed LCAs before reaching out or applying.
Confirm your degree supports specialty occupation
Construction Manager roles typically qualify as specialty occupations when tied to a degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture. A general business degree may weaken your case, so clarify this with your DSO before accepting an offer.
Highlight licensure progress in your applications
Employers are more confident sponsoring candidates working toward a PE license or LEED certification. Demonstrating professional development signals long-term commitment to the field and reduces perceived risk of investing in visa sponsorship.
Address authorization proactively in interviews
When sponsorship comes up, explain your current OPT status, your STEM extension eligibility if applicable, and your H-1B timeline clearly. Employers unfamiliar with OPT appreciate a concise, confident explanation rather than leaving them to research it independently.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Construction Manager on OPT?
Yes, Construction Manager roles are generally eligible for OPT work authorization provided the position is directly related to your degree field, such as construction management, civil engineering, or architecture. Your employer does not need to file any petition during your OPT period, but the job must be tied to your major area of study as reported on your I-20.
Does a Construction Manager job qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree program, not the job title. If you graduated from an ABET-accredited construction management or civil engineering program, your degree likely appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program list, making you eligible for a 24-month extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before assuming you qualify.
How do I find Construction Manager jobs that sponsor visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters Construction Manager roles by visa sponsorship willingness. General job boards surface thousands of listings with no sponsorship context, which wastes time. Searching on Migrate Mate focuses your effort on employers who have already indicated openness to sponsoring international candidates.
Will Construction Manager roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Most Construction Manager positions qualify as specialty occupations when the employer requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field like construction management or civil engineering. Roles that accept any degree, or where the degree requirement is listed as preferred rather than required, can face RFEs. Review the job description carefully before applying.
What happens to my OPT authorization if I switch construction employers?
You can switch employers on OPT, but the new job must still be directly related to your degree program. You are required to report the employer change to your DSO within 10 days so they can update SEVIS. There is no grace period that pauses your OPT clock, so gaps between jobs count against your authorized period.
