Many freight, bus, or heavy vehicle driver roles require a CDL, which F-1 students can obtain using their EAD as valid work authorization documentation. Check your state's DMV requirements early since CDL testing has wait times.

Can F-1 OPT students legally work as drivers in the United States?
Yes, F-1 students on OPT can work as drivers as long as the role is directly related to their field of study. A transportation management, logistics, or supply chain degree typically supports this connection. You must have a valid EAD card before starting work, and your DSO must update your SEVIS record within 10 days of your start date.
Does driving for a gig platform count as valid OPT employment?
It can, but with conditions. USCIS allows self-employment and independent contractor work under OPT if you work at least 20 hours per week and the work relates to your degree.
