How to Get Visa Sponsorship in General Maintenance Worker
Target employers with maintenance departments
Large property management companies, universities, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities hire maintenance staff in-house. These employers are more likely to understand work authorization requirements and have HR processes that accommodate OPT employees without issue.
Understand your OPT end date before negotiating
Most maintenance roles are full-time and long-term. Employers will ask how long you can work. Know your OPT expiration date and whether you qualify for a 24-month STEM extension before your first interview conversation about authorization.
Get your employment details in writing
Your employer must sign your I-983 if you are on STEM OPT. Confirm your job title, start date, and hours worked per week are documented clearly. Ambiguous offer letters create reporting problems with your DSO down the line.
Report employment changes to your DSO promptly
If your job title, employer, or work location changes, you must notify your DSO within ten days. Maintenance workers are sometimes reassigned across sites. Each change must be reported to keep your SEVIS record accurate and your status valid.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a General Maintenance Worker job qualify for F-1 OPT?
It depends on your degree. If you studied facilities management, construction technology, mechanical engineering, or a related field, a General Maintenance Worker role can qualify as directly related employment. Your DSO makes the final determination. Roles involving general labor without a clear connection to your major may not be approvable.
Can General Maintenance Worker jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Potentially yes, if your degree is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List and the job involves applying STEM knowledge directly. Engineering technology and facilities-focused degrees often qualify. Your employer must also be E-Verify enrolled and willing to complete the training plan documentation required for STEM OPT extensions.
Where can I find General Maintenance Worker jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists maintenance and facilities roles from employers who are open to hiring candidates on OPT and other work visa types. Filtering by authorization type saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a company will not sponsor or accommodate OPT students.
Do General Maintenance Worker employers typically understand OPT work authorization?
Familiarity varies widely. Large institutional employers like universities, hospitals, and corporate campuses tend to have HR teams experienced with work authorization. Smaller contractors and property management firms may not. It helps to briefly explain OPT in your cover letter and be prepared to walk the hiring manager through what authorization you hold and for how long.
How many hours per week can I work as a General Maintenance Worker on OPT?
During post-completion OPT, you must work at least 20 hours per week to maintain valid status. Full-time maintenance roles typically exceed that threshold easily. Part-time or seasonal positions that consistently fall below 20 hours per week put your OPT status at risk and should be avoided or supplemented with a second qualifying position.
