General Pediatrician Jobs for OPT Students
General Pediatrician roles are available to F-1 OPT students who have completed a U.S. medical degree and residency. Most positions require USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3, a state medical license, and active OPT employment authorization. STEM OPT extension does not apply to this field, making early employer engagement critical.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in General Pediatrician
Start employer conversations before OPT begins
Pediatric hiring cycles run long. Begin outreach to pediatric practices, hospital systems, and community health centers at least six months before your OPT start date so credentialing and onboarding timelines align with your authorization window.
Confirm your state medical license timeline first
State licensing boards can take three to six months to process applications. Your OPT employment authorization is useless without an active license, so file your state application immediately after matching into or completing your residency program.
Target employers with existing J-1 or H-1B sponsorship history
Hospital systems and Federally Qualified Health Centers that have sponsored foreign-trained physicians before understand the process. They're less likely to withdraw an offer when your OPT expiration date comes up in onboarding conversations.
Use your residency network to surface sponsorship-willing employers
Program directors, attending physicians, and fellow residents who have navigated sponsorship are your most reliable source of employer leads. A warm introduction to a hiring manager carries more weight than a cold application in competitive pediatric markets.
Document all clinical work authorized under OPT carefully
USCIS requires that OPT employment directly relate to your degree field. Keep records of your job title, employer, and start date. Pediatricians moonlighting in unrelated clinical roles risk jeopardizing their authorized status if not properly documented.

Can I work as a General Pediatrician on OPT after completing a U.S. medical degree?
Yes, if you've completed an MD or DO from a U.S. medical school and obtained your state medical license. OPT authorizes employment directly related to your degree field, and pediatric clinical practice qualifies. You must have an active EAD card before seeing patients independently. Residency completion alone doesn't confer work authorization.
Does General Pediatrician qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
No. Medicine is not classified under STEM CIP codes that qualify for the 24-month extension. General Pediatricians on OPT have a 12-month window only. This makes it especially important to pursue H-1B sponsorship or a J-1 waiver pathway early, since there's no extension safety net available in this field.
What visa options should I pursue after OPT as a pediatrician?
The two most common transitions are H-1B sponsorship and the J-1 Conrad 30 waiver program. Conrad 30 is particularly relevant for pediatricians willing to practice in a Health Professional Shortage Area for three years, as it waives the J-1 two-year home residency requirement. Both require employer sponsorship, so identify willing employers well before your OPT expires.
How do I find General Pediatrician employers who are open to sponsoring OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters for employers open to OPT and visa sponsorship, which saves significant time compared to applying blindly. Beyond the platform, hospital systems, children's hospitals, and Federally Qualified Health Centers have the legal and HR infrastructure to sponsor, making them higher-probability targets than small private practices.
Can I work at multiple pediatric practice locations under a single OPT authorization?
Yes, but each location must be tied to the same employer or employer group, and the work must remain within your authorized field. Working for two separate, unaffiliated employers simultaneously requires separate authorization documentation for each. Inform your Designated School Official if your employment situation changes, since unreported changes can jeopardize your OPT status.
