How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Radiation Therapy Technologist
Pursue ARRT certification before your OPT start date
Most radiation therapy departments require ARRT certification or active candidacy status. Having your credentials in order before you begin your OPT period removes the biggest hiring barrier and signals to employers that you're ready to practice independently from day one.
Target hospitals with dedicated radiation oncology departments
Large academic medical centers and cancer hospitals hire radiation therapists at higher volume than general community hospitals. These institutions also have established HR processes for work authorization paperwork, making the OPT employment verification process faster and less confusing for hiring managers.
Be upfront about your OPT timeline during the interview
Radiation therapy roles involve credentialing, onboarding, and orientation that can take four to eight weeks. Starting that conversation early helps employers plan around your authorization window and reduces the risk of a delayed start cutting into your authorized work period.
Clarify that OPT does not require employer sponsorship
Many healthcare HR departments conflate OPT with H-1B sponsorship and decline before reviewing the details. Explaining that OPT is already authorized by USCIS and requires only an employment verification update to your DSO removes a common objection that has nothing to do with your qualifications.
Apply to Joint Commission-accredited facilities first
Accredited hospitals and cancer centers follow standardized HR compliance procedures, which means their staff are more likely to have processed OPT employees before. Smaller or non-accredited clinics may not have the administrative infrastructure to handle work authorization documentation correctly or on time.
Report your employment to your DSO within 10 days of starting
OPT regulations require your DSO to update your SEVIS record with your employer's name, address, and your start date. Failing to report on time can create compliance issues that affect your visa status, even if the job itself is directly related to your field of study.

Does radiation therapy qualify as a STEM field for the OPT STEM extension?
Radiation therapy is classified under CIP code 51.0907, which is not on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Standard OPT for radiation therapy provides 12 months of work authorization. There is no 24-month STEM extension available for this degree program, so planning your job search and any future visa sponsorship timeline around the 12-month window is important.
Do employers need to file any paperwork with USCIS to hire me on OPT?
No. Employers do not file anything with USCIS to hire you on OPT. You work on the strength of your EAD card, and your DSO handles the SEVIS record update after you report your employment. The employer's only obligation is to verify your work authorization using Form I-9, the same process used for any new hire.
Can I work as a radiation therapist at multiple facilities while on OPT?
Yes, but each employer must be reported to your DSO and entered into SEVIS. Per-diem or travel radiation therapy positions are common, and OPT regulations allow multiple concurrent employers as long as each position is directly related to your degree in radiation therapy and you are working at least 20 hours per week in total.
Where can I find radiation therapy jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship and work authorization compatibility. Rather than sorting through general healthcare job listings where OPT eligibility is unclear, Migrate Mate lets you browse radiation therapy positions where employers have indicated openness to OPT candidates, saving significant time during a short authorization window.
What happens to my OPT status if my radiation therapy job ends before my EAD expires?
OPT includes an aggregate unemployment limit of 90 days. If your job ends, that clock starts running immediately. You can seek a new radiation therapy position, but you must stay under the 90-day cap across your entire OPT period. Reporting any change in employment status to your DSO promptly is required to keep your SEVIS record compliant.
