OPT IT Support Jobs
IT Support roles are strong options for F-1 OPT students because most positions tie directly to computer science, information systems, or information technology degrees, satisfying the degree-relevance requirement USCIS expects. Many employers in this space have experience filing H-1B visa petitions, making them realistic long-term options.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in IT Support
Frame your degree clearly on your resume
OPT requires your job to be directly related to your degree. List your major prominently and connect it to the role in your summary. A CS or IT degree paired with an IT Support title is a clean match employers and USCIS both recognize.
Apply to managed service providers and IT consulting firms
MSPs and IT consulting firms hire IT Support staff at scale and often have established OPT and H-1B processes. They tend to move faster than enterprise hiring cycles and frequently offer exposure to multiple client environments.
Get CompTIA A+ or similar certifications before applying
Certifications like CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications signal hands-on competence and differentiate you from other candidates. Many IT Support job postings list these as preferred qualifications, and holding them strengthens your application considerably.
Clarify your OPT timeline upfront with recruiters
Tell recruiters your OPT end date and whether you're eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension early. IT Support roles under CIP codes like 11.0101 or 11.0901 typically qualify, so confirm your degree classification before having that conversation.
Use your OPT period to build toward a sponsorship-ready profile
Employers weigh the cost of H-1B sponsorship against your value to the team. Document your impact: tickets resolved, systems maintained, downtime reduced. Concrete performance data makes the sponsorship conversation significantly easier at renewal time.
IT Support OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do IT Support jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
IT Support roles can qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree falls under an eligible CIP code. Degrees in computer science, information systems, and information technology are common qualifiers. You'll need to confirm your specific CIP code with your Designated School Official, and your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to participate.
How do I find IT Support employers who sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters IT Support roles by sponsorship willingness, so you're not guessing which employers are open to OPT candidates. Look for companies with H-1B filing history in public DOL data as an additional signal that they have an established immigration process in place.
Does my degree need to match the IT Support job title exactly?
It doesn't need to be an exact title match, but the connection must be defensible. A computer science or information systems degree supporting an IT Support role is a straightforward match. Where it gets complicated is if your degree is in an unrelated field. USCIS expects a clear relationship between your coursework and the work you're doing.
Can I work IT Support jobs at a staffing agency on OPT?
Yes, but with important caveats. On standard OPT, staffing agency placements are generally allowed as long as you're performing work related to your degree at the client site. On STEM OPT, the rules are stricter: you must have a formal training plan with the employer of record, and speculative employment arrangements are not permitted.
What happens to my OPT if I lose my IT Support job?
You have a 90-day unemployment allowance across your entire OPT period, not per job. If you're on STEM OPT, the allowance increases to 150 days total. Losing your IT Support role starts the clock, so it's important to begin your job search immediately. Report any employment changes to your DSO promptly to keep your SEVIS record accurate.
