Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Summer Intern to support our Purchasing and Inventory Management teams. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience across the full procurement lifecycle — from sourcing and purchase order processing to physical inventory verification through cycle counts. The intern will work directly with our Purchasing team and Warehouse staff, playing an active role in day-to-day operations. This role is ideal for students pursuing degrees in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field who are looking to apply classroom knowledge in a fast-paced, real-world environment.
Key Responsibilities
Purchasing Support
- Assist buyers in processing purchase orders (POs) and tracking order status from placement through receipt.
- Research and evaluate suppliers, obtain competitive quotes, and support vendor qualification activities.
- Review and reconcile purchase order discrepancies, invoices, and delivery documentation.
- Maintain and update item master data, vendor records, and purchasing logs in the ERP system.
- Support expediting efforts to ensure on-time delivery of critical materials and components.
- Assist in identifying cost savings opportunities and documenting findings for the purchasing team.
- Help prepare purchasing reports, spend analyses, and supplier performance summaries.
Cycle Count & Inventory Management
- Participate in scheduled and unscheduled cycle counts across warehouse locations and storage areas.
- Accurately count, record, and verify inventory quantities using handheld scanners or count sheets.
- Investigate and document inventory variances, escalating discrepancies to the inventory control supervisor.
- Assist in root cause analysis for count discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
- Help maintain organized and properly labeled storage locations to support inventory accuracy.
- Support the reconciliation of physical counts against system records in the ERP/WMS.
- Contribute to improving cycle count procedures and documentation standards.
Qualifications
Required
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Associate's degree program in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy — especially when working with numbers and inventory data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel (sorting, filtering, basic formulas).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Willingness to work in a warehouse or distribution environment, including standing and walking for extended periods.
Preferred
- Prior coursework or experience in procurement, logistics, inventory control, or operations.
- Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar).
- Experience with warehouse management or inventory systems.
- Basic understanding of purchasing processes including purchase orders, receiving, and accounts payable.
What You Will Learn
By the end of the internship, you will have gained practical, resume-building experience including:
- End-to-end purchasing workflow — from requisition to receipt.
- Inventory control best practices including cycle count methodologies (ABC analysis, random sampling, location-based counting).
- How to work within an ERP system to manage procurement and inventory data.
- Cross-functional collaboration with warehouse, finance, and operations teams.
- Data analysis and reporting techniques applied to supply chain metrics.
- Problem-solving in a live operational environment with real business impact.
Physical Requirements
This role involves a combination of office and warehouse work. Candidates should be able to:
- Stand, walk, and move throughout warehouse or production floor areas for extended periods.
- Lift and carry items up to 30 pounds occasionally.
- Use handheld inventory scanning devices.
- Work in varying temperature conditions typical of a warehouse environment.
Salary Range: $20/hr

Connect your degree to the management role
OPT requires your job to relate to your field of study. Frame your application around how your business, engineering, or relevant degree directly informs the management responsibilities you'll be handling. Generic applications get rejected first.
Target employers with existing OPT hiring infrastructure
Companies that have hired OPT students before move faster and ask fewer basic questions about your work authorization. Look for employers with structured internship programs, which signals they understand the I-983 training plan process for STEM OPT students.
Prepare your I-20 and EAD documentation upfront
Management internship hiring managers aren't always familiar with OPT paperwork. Have your EAD card, valid I-20, and a brief explanation of your authorization timeline ready before the offer stage so nothing stalls at HR.
Prioritize roles with clearly defined management responsibilities
USCIS looks at whether your position genuinely relates to your degree. Internship titles can be vague, so verify that the job description includes supervision, project ownership, or operational responsibilities that align with your academic coursework.
Communicate your OPT end date early and honestly
If your OPT expires before the internship ends, tell the employer upfront. Many will plan around your timeline or discuss H-1B visa sponsorship. Surprises after an offer is extended damage trust and can cost you the position.
Use your program for STEM OPT extension leverage
If you studied a STEM-designated field like business analytics, information systems, or engineering management, your 24-month STEM OPT extension significantly increases your value. Mention your extension eligibility when negotiating internship duration or future full-time conversion.
Management Internship OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a management internship qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, as long as the role directly relates to your field of study. A business administration student managing a team or overseeing operations clearly qualifies. The connection must be substantive, not superficial. If your degree is in a non-business field, document how the management function ties back to your academic program before accepting an offer.
Where can I find management internships that accept OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by sponsorship and work authorization compatibility. Rather than sorting through general job boards where OPT status creates uncertainty, Migrate Mate surfaces management internship listings from employers who already understand OPT and are open to hiring international students.
Do I need to report a management internship to my DSO?
Yes. You must report your employer, job title, start date, and work address to your Designated School Official so they can update your SEVIS record. This applies to all OPT employment, including internships. Failing to report within the required window can jeopardize your status, so notify your DSO as soon as you accept an offer.
Can a management internship count toward STEM OPT extension requirements?
Yes, if the internship is at an E-Verify employer and the role relates to your STEM-designated degree. You and your employer must complete Form I-983, the Training Plan for STEM OPT Students, which documents your learning objectives and supervision structure. A well-scoped management internship with defined goals typically satisfies these requirements without issue.
What happens if my OPT expires during a management internship?
You must stop working immediately when your OPT authorization ends. If you're STEM-eligible, applying for your extension well before expiration gives you a 180-day cap-gap period to continue working while the extension is pending. Talk to your DSO early and align your internship timeline with your EAD expiration date to avoid any gap in authorization.
