OPT Technical Intern Jobs
Technical Intern roles are among the most OPT-accessible positions in the U.S. Most are STEM-designated, meaning you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension after your initial 12 months. Employers typically file an I-983 training plan, so confirm that before accepting an offer.

Confirm the role is STEM OPT eligible before applying
Check that your degree CIP code matches the Department of Homeland Security's STEM designated degree program list. A Technical Intern role at a non-STEM company won't qualify for the 24-month extension regardless of your degree field.
Ask about the I-983 training plan early
STEM OPT extension requires a signed I-983 from your employer. Raise this in your final interview round, not after the offer. Employers unfamiliar with the form may need time to prepare it before your extension deadline.
Verify the employer is E-Verify enrolled
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be actively enrolled in E-Verify. This is a hard requirement, not a preference. Confirm enrollment status directly with HR before signing any offer letter for a Technical Intern position.
Apply at least 90 days before your OPT expiration
STEM extension applications filed up to 90 days before your current OPT end date keep you authorized to work while USCIS processes the request. Missing this window creates a gap in work authorization that can void your internship offer.
Target companies with established intern OPT programs
Larger technology companies and research institutions regularly hire international interns and understand the I-983 and E-Verify requirements. Smaller startups may offer great technical work but lack HR infrastructure to support OPT documentation correctly.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for OPT-friendly Technical Intern roles
Many Technical Intern postings don't explicitly state OPT sponsorship availability. Migrate Mate surfaces roles specifically vetted for OPT students, saving you from applying to positions where your work authorization will be rejected outright.
Technical Intern OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Technical Intern on OPT?
Yes, if the role is directly related to your degree field. OPT requires that your employment be connected to the major you studied. A computer science graduate working as a Technical Intern at a software company is a clear match. A business administration graduate in the same role would need to demonstrate a specific connection to their coursework.
Does a Technical Intern role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It can, but two conditions must be met: your degree must appear on the DHS STEM designated degree program list, and your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. If both conditions apply, you can apply for a 24-month extension, giving you up to 36 months of total OPT authorization. Confirm both requirements with your DSO and employer before accepting an offer.
What is the I-983 training plan and why does it matter for Technical Interns?
The I-983 is a training plan your employer must complete and sign as part of your STEM OPT extension application. It documents your learning objectives, supervision structure, and how the internship connects to your degree. Without a completed I-983, your STEM extension application cannot proceed. Ask HR whether they have experience completing this form before you accept the position.
How do I find Technical Intern jobs that accept OPT students?
Most standard job postings don't specify OPT eligibility, which means you spend time applying to roles that will screen you out during recruiter review. Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and surfaces Technical Intern roles from employers already open to hiring international candidates, so you spend less time filtering and more time applying to roles that fit.
Can I work part-time as a Technical Intern on OPT?
Yes, OPT permits part-time work of at least 20 hours per week during your authorized period. However, if you are applying for a STEM OPT extension, your employer must confirm the part-time schedule on your I-983 and demonstrate that the training objectives are still achievable. Full-time roles generally make the I-983 approval process more straightforward.
