How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Strategy Intern
Target firms with structured intern-to-full-time pipelines
Management consulting firms and corporate strategy teams frequently convert interns to full-time roles and have established H-1B sponsorship processes. A return offer dramatically improves your chances of securing sponsorship before your OPT window closes.
Frame your degree field clearly in every application
Strategy roles require a direct connection between your degree and the work. Explicitly state your major and how it relates to the role in your cover letter. Business, economics, and industrial engineering degrees align most cleanly with strategy internship requirements.
Apply early in the recruiting cycle
Corporate strategy internship recruiting often begins six to nine months before the summer start date. OPT students with limited time on their authorization window benefit from early applications, giving employers time to complete any required OPT verification steps.
Highlight analytical tools and frameworks you know
Employers hiring strategy interns expect proficiency in Excel modeling, PowerPoint storytelling, and frameworks like Porter's Five Forces or SWOT. Quantifying your prior project impact gives hiring managers confidence you can contribute immediately within a short internship window.
Verify the employer has sponsored OPT or H-1B workers before
Not all firms that post strategy internships have experience with OPT authorization. Researching an employer's prior sponsorship history before applying saves time and focuses your effort on companies already comfortable navigating work authorization for international candidates.

Can F-1 students on OPT work as a Strategy Intern?
Yes. Strategy Intern roles generally qualify under OPT because the work is directly related to a business, economics, or management degree. Your internship must fall within your authorized field of study, and the position must begin after your OPT start date is approved by USCIS. Confirm the role aligns with your DSO before accepting an offer.
Do Strategy Intern positions typically lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Many do, particularly at large consulting firms and Fortune 500 companies with established recruiting pipelines. Firms like McKinsey, BCG, Deloitte, and major technology companies regularly sponsor former interns for H-1B visas following a full-time return offer. Smaller firms vary widely, so asking directly during the offer stage is the most reliable way to gauge willingness.
Where can I find Strategy Intern jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is the best place to search. The platform filters jobs by OPT eligibility so you can focus exclusively on employers open to F-1 work authorization, rather than sorting through postings that require permanent residency or citizenship. This saves significant time during an already compressed OPT job search window.
Does a Strategy Intern role qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If your underlying degree is in a STEM-designated field, such as industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or management information systems, you may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension regardless of the internship title. A general business or economics degree typically does not qualify. Check your program's CIP code with your DSO.
How many hours per week can I work as a Strategy Intern on OPT?
On post-completion OPT, there is no cap on weekly hours. You can work full time, which most strategy internships require during the summer cohort. Pre-completion OPT is limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session and full time during official breaks. Most summer internships assume post-completion OPT, but confirm your authorization type with your DSO.
